3/13 - A little Hockey

OK - had a chance to photograph a little hockey last night. A few of my favorites. Shot with Nikon Z9, f2.8, ISO 2500 at 1/1250th.

I've been experimenting a bit to see any difference between sRGB and Adobe color. Also trying to go wider with the 70-200 f2.8 and crop vs tight. Wider seems to let me get a few more shots but at the cost of having to crop more. Going tighter I lose more shots due to cutting off parts of the subject's anatomy, but the images are cleaner. I am considering going to the full 45 mp image size to see if that might at least yield less impact on my cropping.

Any feedback on what works for you would be appreciated. It may just come down to more practice on these faster paced sports.

Nice action shots. But the first photo makes me think of a Conga Line.

Most shots here are tighter. IMO those are the best. Very nice work.

Thank you. I guess my "style" is getting firmly in place. I prefer the tighter shots most of the time to give the feeling you are part of the game. Every once in a while (like the shot o goal) I will open it up a bit.

Excellent shots, what was your previous body? Have you done any comparisons? I love tight too!

Thank you! I previously used a D5 and before that a Z6 and D500. The D5 was great. It produced crisp images and performed very well in low light with a very good frame rate. I happened to find myself in a position that allowed me to get a Z9, thinking if I didn't see better results, someone would buy it from me! As it turns out, the Z9 is a bit better but the biggest difference was that I get MORE keepers than other previous bodies.

I shoot with a D5 and usually have spectacular results, focus-wise. Waiting on my Z9 (grrrrrr) so it's nice to get some "comparitive" comments before the fact. Are you using the 3D plus eye for these shots?...I'm encouraged!

No, I did not. I am finding for hockey and men's basketball, the wide area - large setting works best. I also turn the subject detection (eye) OFF and let it go with focusing upon the nearest subject. As long as part of the subject is kept in the "box" it will retain focus.

To perhaps manage expectations - don't expect tons of better images than what the D5 produces. But rather, expect MORE images in sharp focus and expect the focus capability to be much better. Take this time to go out and read up/watch all you can on the different focus modes. That has been my biggest learning experience. Starting to get the hang of it, but at first, I was expecting miracles. Remember this is new technology and will probably require a different mindset. I will say this - once I started using the Z9, I moved entirely to mirrorless and didn't look back, selling my two year old D5.

I think you'll like!
