Nikon D4
300 2.8

70-200 2.8
Aperture priority
Auto White Balance

First game of the season. I felt my timing was off a bit. Like I missed a play at home, I should have been all over that. I was looking at the play at second base. Reflexes was slow.
Oh well, I will do better next time.

Next softball shoot I will use the 200-500 5.6 vr. I feel like once the game gets started the 300 2.8 is a bit short. Good for mommie shots prior to first pitch. I also need the versatility of the zoom.

Epic series Jules... as always!
Your D4 with the 300mm f/2.8 is awesome here.

"the 300 2.8 is a bit short" Really? Looking good to me, albeit I'm loving the infield action.
Not a fan of the 200-500mm f/5.6 anymore... My AF 300mm f/2.8 has spoiled me by it's fabulous subject isolation.

However go with what your clients like... Nothing else really matters in my humble estimation.

Please keep up the good work... not many "people" pictures on UHH anymore... I'm finding the sports forum provides the lion's share of good portraiture now... And you have incredible talent in capturing the decisive moment(s)

a.k.a. you're a very tough act to follow Jules... Cheers!

Great shots. I love how you pick up the odd-field “action”

Greetings Thomas: I always enjoy your comments and suggestions. I know the other club members like them too. Your insight, class, and knowledge goes a long way.
On the 200-500 you may be right, however I feel I owe it to myself to at least try it again for baseball. Or I may put the 300 on my D500 for the extra reach. Softball the 300 is ok on a D4 but baseball is going to be short.
I will try the different combinations on Saturday's game.
Thank you again as your the man.
Jules

Great softball set Jules! Peak action captured brilliantly! Not rusty at all in my opinion. I think the 300 f2.8, depending where your positioned (1st or 3rd), is good for those close plays - nice and tight and crisp with great separation of the background. I had plenty of keepers from my 300 f2.8 for my first baseball outing a few weeks ago.

I'll be shooting a baseball game Saturday morning, and I'll using for the first time my 400mm f2.8 with 1.4x TC (now 560mm f4.0), along with both my 70-200mm f2.8 and 300mm f2.8 for the different distances on my Canon bodies. Been busy with team/player portraits over the last 10 days, I'm looking for sports action now :)

Hello sir Rick:
I can't wait to see you shots from a 400 with 1.4. Should be able to reach the outfielders with no problem at all.
Go get em.

Tomorrow I will strap on the 300 2.8 to the D500 for the extra reach for a varsity baseball game. I will have about 1 hour and 30 minutes of good light. Next week should be much better with daylight savings. Nice sunny days late in the day.
Sat. I have a 10 am game. Had a nice sale today from one of the Raider execs. 16 shots of his daughter.
Be well,
Jules

Wow impressive on the 16-shot photo sell (never had that many at most 8 from 1-person of the small size format)! Hopefully it was the large format sizes for major $$.

Be well my friend, good luck tomorrow/Saturday.
Rick
