Welcome the the new LIGHTNG section.
The Admin was kind enough to approve this new section. I am going to prepare some material and ideas to get us going. Meanwhile, feel free to post any suggestions, requests for topics, or any ideas you have that will enrich this section. This section is gonna be dedicated to every aspect of light and lighting for photography of all kinds. Whatever you shoot landscapes, still life, commercial products, flowers, birds and bees, portraits, photojournalism, street photography or what have you, you are dealing with LIGHT- the more you know about the science and aesthetics of light usage, the better you will be equipped to achieve the results you want.
It does not need to be "rocket science". There is a bit of applied physics and geometry and the rest is pure FUN! It was not even expensive. There is FREE natural light, your lighting gear or setup can be as simple or complex as you like and if to know your lighting, you can produce a masterpiece with a candle. If you don't know much about light and lighting, you can have an elaborate studio set up with many lights but all you will get is a big electric bill.
This will be a much needed section! One of the most important aspects of Photography.
Much needed and appreciated.
looking forward to reducing my electric bill.....
Thanks!!
Thanks, E.L., for doing this. The only light I've used for decades of photo taking is "available" and "flash". I look forward to trying different techniques. I think this is a much needed section.
Looking forward to being en lightened!
Congrats on this new section!

This post is about posting rather than lighting.
A section like this is likely to have a lot of tutorial style posts. In my opinion, User Pages are ideal for that kind of thing. User pages are generated just like a normal post, but they have one great advantage: you can edit them at ANY TIME. A user page can be set up easily and polished until it is ready for public consumption, then a link to the page can be included in a post here to let people know that there is information available to them. If you discover an error or if there is a better way to do something, the user page can be modified years later. PS: I find it useful to place a note at the top of the page with the history of the page so you can see when it was originally posted and when it was edited.
The only disadvantages to a user post are:
(1) It's not a thread. The page is only available to the poster for additions, comments, changes. Comments on the page are limited to the normal thread structure we're used to.
(2) For large posts, there is a size limit. I think it's something like 15,000 characters. Anything larger than that has to be posted as a PDF attachment to a post.
I have a user page showing how to generate a user page.
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user-page?upnum=2923Another point: a tutorial post will flow better if the included images are mixed in with the text. That way it is clear what text applies to which image. I have a tutorial page on how to include images within text in a UHH post.
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user-page?upnum=2930Note that including images with text requires an image to be available online, and is referred to by a URL. I used to use my personal website to store images I put into threads, but this has one disadvantage: I'm old, and there will be a time when my website goes down when I go down. That will mean the images are no longer available online. Rongnongno posted a solution to this problem some time ago and I have adopted it. Basically you generate a useless thread and post your images in that thread. Once you do that, the images are contained in the UHH system and you can copy the link to the image and use it in your post. Your image will not disappear until UHH disappears. To copy an image from your useless post, display the image on your browser by looking at the post, right-click and choose "copy image address". That will place the URL in your clipboard and you can paste it into your post using [ img ] URL [ /img ] (without the spaces by the square brackets).
So how do I subscribe to this section?

Go to the UHH home page. You will see a list of your subscribed sections.
At the bottom of that list is "All Sections". Click on that and you will get a list of all the available sections. New sections (like this one) will appear at the bottom of the list.
There will be a "subscribe" button next to the section name. Click on that.
20220302 09:34EST I see 50 subscribed currently.

Thanks. It had been so long since I had done this, I'd forgotten how!
Looking forward to reading and learning from fellow UHHers about light and how to control/use it. Hopefully I will also be able to contribute some information to others.

Thank you for starting this new section! I look forward to posts related to still life/product and portraiture, particularly with mixed light sources.
