Thought this might be of interest - it's a month old - since we depend so much on our hard drives...

They publish quarterly reports on brands, sizes and failures.

Interesting info.

Also interesting that the most OTS computers use Seagate drives.
Less expensive than the others?

I like to use WD Gold, with an MTBF of over 2 million hours.

I saw a 4TB Seagate for $80 and a 4TB WD Black for $130. I'd get the WD. If I recall correctly, the Seagate did not come with a warranty.

The best choice seems to depend more on intended use.

Those for NAS use (and similar, but less relevant to people like us) tend to be a bit more expensive, but worth it. I expect my NAS drives to work 24/7 for years without interruption.

HDs for internal PC use are different, but why anyone would choose a spinning drive for use in a PC these days is a bit of a mystery to me. Swapped mine out a long time ago for a 2Tb and 1Tb Samsung long ago and have been very happy with them.

Very simple, because we want to.

Why is it a mystery that people don't go with the latest and greatest all the time?
Just because you think they should?

If you want to use older (tried and tested) technology of course you are free too.

My comment - which really didn't need your somewhat snotty reply - merely pointed out that SSDs are an option, giving vastly increased speed which is useful for saving and retrieving some of the larger files that processing photographs can generate.

The mystery part is why some people who spend serious money on camera gear - which I expect includes you - would prefer save a little money to squander a lot of time.

SSDs have been mainstream for a long time and I don't know for sure if (or why) you can still buy a laptop with a spinning platter.

Your money, your choice, so suit yourself.

Not snotty, just a question from an observation. The fact that you don't care for it makes it snotty in your mind.

I do, I'm not a lemming.

SSDs have a limited life expectancy, expressed in Terabytes Written.

Which is one of the reasons they aren't used for NAS/Raid drives, as far as I understand, as they NAS units - are running continuously, rewriting all the time.

However, the TBW values are sufficiently high for quite long term use for regular PC use.

Hmmm.
Makes me wonder how may R/W cycles people who constantly work on editing very large image files would use.
