Marksmen Hockey #3

Third time's a charm. I shot another hockey game and I think I'm beginning to get the hang of this camera. At least my hockey shots are working better for me!

Thanks to the recommendation of someone on FB, I maxed out my Focus Tracking (a3) setting to "5" with movement set to Erratic. Previously I had set movement as Erratic, but Focus Tracking was set to "3". Changing to "5" helped a LOT!

I do realize not everyone has this camera and may not be interested in what I’m sharing. If that be the case, just hit the delete button!

I actually remembered to go with f2.8 and ISO at 2,000 on the 70-200 f2.8. Sure helps if one remembers to double check your settings BEFORE you start shooting! LOL! I alternated between 3D and Dynamic Area Medium. It was necessary to be mindful of the action. Sometimes 3D worked best, others Dynamic Medium worked. Just have to remember to periodically evaluate the event and perhaps experiment a bit.

In a FB group, there was a conversation about inadvertently changing aperture settings with the dials. Advice was given to use custom function F2 to lock aperture as they found theirs would sometimes change during a shoot. I experienced the same thing on virtually all of my cameras, DSLR and mirrorless. In the course of raising and lowering my camera, I would inadvertently touch those dials and suddenly under or overexposed images would start to appear! I didn't even know about that option. However, that setting is now in "My Menu" for easy access. I am so looking forward to using it!

Camera envy. I experienced my first case of "camera envy" when another photographer asked if I was using the new Z9. Of course, guilty as charged, but it opened up a great opportunity to not only talk about it, but also other topics about photographing the team. Gotta love this hobby!

A comment about post processing using Lightroom Classic. As I was going through the images from the game, while they were quite sharp, they seemed a bit grainy. I thought it was one of the side effects of the greater image size. I exported several and looked at them using the FastStone app. They looked as I was hoping! So in my case I think there is some merit to the comments about Adobe's rendition of the Z9 files (I am using High efficiency format) needing to be tweaked. Please note, I did run these through Topaz's Sharpen AI to try and account for the dirty glass through which I was shooting. But other than that, nothing special.

Next up will be a basketball game later this week and then gymnastics! The foundations of what I learned getting set up for hockey will help as I attend those events.

In the meantime, here are a few from last night’s game. To see the rest, go to: https://rickcornell.zenfolio.com/f704205936

Very nice set of images; I'd say you've got it figured out!

I totally understand accidentally changing camera settings during shooting only to realize 10min later your ss, f-stop or iso mysteriously moved. I just found out what the lock button on my canon r6 does and I can select which dials it locks. That said, I lock/unlock all my dials with a single press of the lock button. Finally all my captures are at the intended settings. I again enjoyed all your hockey photo, not much hockey down here in South Texas.

Thank you! The one with all of the bodies in front of the goal was to share with others how the Auto Focus Lock set to "5" did a good job within a group of players. I try to follow the "two eyes and the puck" criteria when I am able!

Interesting. I'll have to see if I can do that with the Z9. (still learning!). I may just be limited to bringing up the menu and changing settings there. But having a single button to lock/unlock would be great!
