Canon, Nikon, Sony and others will sell what sells. Sony has bailed on DSLRs entirely. Canon and Nikon still have some in their lineup. The pandemic and chip shortage may ultimately be the demise of future DSLR development. Canon and Nikon seem to be betting the bank on mirrorless cameras and dedicated lenses. Nikon doesn't even have the resources to crank out the Z9 at a pace to meet demand. They're also flooding the market with many mirrorless camera options, and I don't see them or Canon investing in advancing DSLR cameras right now. They'll certainly continue to sell what people will buy, but I think that by the time things get sorted out, the DSLR will be dead as far as anything new. Interest will wane. The good thing may be that present day DSLRs take fine pictures, and prices may take a dive in the future when camera makers finally dump them.

If you read the article Canon says that they WILL bring DSLRs to market.
This sounds like new models.
And if you get out of USA centric thinking there could be other markets besides the USA where DSLRs are still strong.

I don't know whether his statement is wishful thinking or reality. This is a very unsettled time for the camera industry. The chip shortage is real and has caused Sony and Canon to both halt production of some cameras. (Canon can't even find the chips to put in their printer ink cartridges.) This will take some time to sort out. The market may be different in a couple of years. I honestly don't know. I'm just thinking to myself and reading what I can about this situation.

Personally, I just bought a Nikon D850. I do think that they could take that camera farther in some areas, however the rumored replacement is 1-2 years overdue, and a lot of people think that the time for it has passed. I looked at the Z7ii, roughly the equivalent camera, and the lens issue killed it for me. I have some perfectly fine glass that needs a motor in the body to focus. I'm not interested in "starting over."

You sound like a Nikon fanboy and this response proves it beyond all doubt.
Nikon cannot get chips to make cameras and on top of that cannot even make a sensor.
This is obvious as the Z9 AF lags behind Sony and even further behind Canon. And at 30 fps is woefully lagging because it cannot even do raw files.

I'm only a Nikon fanboy because I started with a Nikon FTn in 1969 and never switched brands, going through about 5 of their cameras over the years, not to mention many lenses that I still have or have given to my son in-law who still shoots film. I have nothing against Canon. I have a small Canon GX7 II that I use when I don't want to carry the "big guy" around. It takes excellent pictures. I think that Canon makes the best printers for my purposes. If I had started with Canon to begin with, I'd be shooting all Canon.

I think that Canon and Nikon make roughly equivalent cameras, not exactly equivalent but close enough. The point of mentioning the Nikon D850 is that the same situation exists now with wondering where Nikon's DSLR are going. If I knew a replacement was coming, I would have waited to buy the camera. I don't think it is, not where things are now. From what I see, Nikon is betting the bank on mirrorless and can't keep up with what it takes to get a new product out there (Z9). Canon and Sony have competitive products. Nikon's only real advantage over the others is price, but only if you can get the camera. They all need to continue to move forward to have an edge over one another, and I think that Nikon is at risk of failing in the long run. They need something more special than the others offer, and I don't see them being able to get it out there if they come up with that something. Not only that, it would have to be so special that it would convince Sony and Canon users to switch brands and entire systems, and I don't see that happening either.

Again you have wandered.
Canon appears to say that they will still be developing DSLRs.
This is NOT new.
Even as the manual FD was becoming forgotten, Canon brought out a new FD camera the T60 intended for certain markets outside of the USA.
No one but Canon knows the future but the article alludes by Canon that the EF is not dead yet.

Sorry for wandering. This would be easier in a face to face conversation. The market will determine how Canon moves forward with DSLR development. It isn't just what they can produce. I'm sure they have concrete ideas about how to improve these cameras. The pandemic and chip shortage are in play here. By the time that gets sorted out, the market and demand may have changed. We just have to see where things go.
