Virtually every decision is influenced by money, and it never works in favor of the general population.

Very true, regardless of the country or the political system.

No, here in the US the decision is made by a faceless panel of bean counters who are in effect making medical decisions and therefore practicing medicine without a license. They decide what treatment I can get based on what is best for their profits, not what is best for me. In the UK, the government panels are there not to make medical decisions for individuals, but to keep costs from spiraling out of control as they have in the US.

In 2006 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The best available treatment for me was HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). This method was approved in almost every country in the world, but not the USA. Why? Because it is a cheap, outpatient procedure with no overnight hospital stay, therefore low profit margin. So the FDA was blocking it. Just like they do with other innovative therapies developed elsewhere which might reduce profit margins of US companies. My insurance refused to pay, saying it was "experimental" even though Japan was doing 5 year follow up studies. They also claimed it was "not medically necessary" even though I clearly had cancer. I ended up going offshore and paying for it myself.

The idea that some global left-wing cabal is trying to wreck the health services industry (it is far from health "care") in this country is total nonsense of the Q***n variety. The problem with health care in the US is greedy runaway capitalism, not socialism.

Being from the UK, but living in the US, I can say that the UK system is far better except for the wealthiest 1%, and they can afford to go anywhere they choose for treatment.
No, here in the US the decision is made by a facel... (show quote)

I fully appreciate your evaluation. My primary point is that the profession of medicine in the US has been corrupted by the initial incursion of government into medical care with Medicare in the 1960s, which was purportedly aimed at retirees at age 65 with a life expectancy then of about 67 or so. The massive increase in the cost of medical care can be attributed in large part to the profiteers and bureaucracy that invaded the profession. I recently had a procedure on my back not “approved” by Medicare that has resulted in major pain relief for which there was no other treatment short of narcotics; I paid out of pocket. If it had been approved by Medicare, the approved charges would have been some- fold higher than what I paid. I know we will never go back to the lower cost of Medicine as a pure profession. Bureaucratic guidelines and dictates as prescriptions for medical therapies are a bad substitute for true professional management.

The overt cynicism permeating this discussion is like overconsumption of alcohol. They can both bring into question the credibility of the opiner.

The U.S. health care system has some serious flaws that need to be addressed. But to blame everything on greedy corporations and government overreach???

When faced with the need for medical care I'd still rather be in the U.S. than in most other parts of the world.....
