Planning and patience = success

For probably a year or longer, the idea of getting the DHL airplane and delivery truck in one shot has been a goal. The colors and design are so eye catching and maybe it's the reminder of Kodak and its color logo. Some times you just have to improvise to complete the vision.

Cool, it looks like you accomplished it. I would have had the plane and the truck slight further from the edges of the frame. Just a basic composition aesthetics thing. I take it "improvise" means you composites some or all of the image.

I am also curious. Would your image if it is a created manipulation be convincing to someone who knows that location and whether a DHL plane and truck would ever cross paths like that. I have never been to Reno. In any case an interesting project and image.

Yes, the paths might cross at the location chosen. This is Pyramid highway and reasonably well trafficked. Timing would be another matter totally, for crossing paths, of course.

The truck is a model diecast and reasonably detailed. Shot in a softbox setting. The plane is real. Shot elsewhere and actually in a landing config. i.e. wheels down and flaps! (Some modifications were needed therefore to show flight mode) The road scene was taken on Jan. 1 and seemed like the best element for the composite.

That is great, it totally fooled me other than I wondered why I could not see the driver. I have tried photographing model vehicles such as ones that I could never afford a real car of, like a 1963 to 1965 Corvette. Friends immediately knew it was of a 1:18 scale diecast. I think I had too much resolution and unnatural lighting. Plus it had metallic flake paint and so the flakes were way too big. I might try similar with one of my solid color diecasts and a careful composite. Thanks again for sharing.

If this inspired you in some way, then I'm totally delighted and await your posting of the results. I can concur with the metal flake paint on some models, by the way. Sold colors do work best. I used a blue background for the truck in the softbox, and the built-in led lights overhead. Ended up with a rather clean image and easy to extract, by doing it in this method. Oh, and just imagine the driver was in the back of the truck for a moment... ha ha, since the vehicle is partially parked by the shoulder of the road!

I liked your concept. I didn't see the background through the passenger window. Very hard to get all the perspectives correct on models.
I did some playing around on your image. Changing a little bit of lighting and then doing some sizing and perspective adjustments on your truck. If you would like to see the results let me know. Fun image.

Here is what I cam up with. I lightened your plane. I think it was as you shott it but it still looked like it was a placed image, reason for the adjustments. The truck looked like it was going off the road in the original. So I did some warping on it.

Shame the front wheel looks funny and there is part of the landscape going in the drivers window...

Sorry pixelmaven, I thought my comment would go on Jim-Pops redo of your composite as that is the one I clicked on reply to and that is the one with the problems. Your composite if fine. Looking at the angle you have placed the van it looks as if the driver may have just pulled over for some reason.. Once again so sorry for the confusion..

Thank you!! I suspected that was the case. Yes, it's all up to interpretation by the viewer. I did kind of infer that the van was pulled over since my car was also pulled over in the opposing lane. Good call on that! I appreciate your insights and no need for an apology.
