I think it was the communicators in the early Star Trek TV shows were made from old electric razors. Maybe that was in Star Wars, I can't recall which. I also read that a comparison between the Star Trek program and the first movie, the program had cardboard sets with million dollar scripts while the movie had a million dollar set and a cardboard script.
