Hi All - I am overwhelmed by the amount of pictures throughout the years I have in boxes - what would you recommend as the best means to organize and store - I would prefer not to digitize. Thank you - Peter

As you go through the pictures you might want to take some out and put them in a scrap book or album and label them so future generations will enjoy them. I have heaps of photos that I have inherited, but the majority are use less since I do not know who the people are or where they were taken. Basically no historical context that would make them of interest to me or anyone else. I guess what I am saying is that if you are going to make the effort to preserve your pictures, if you are doing it for anybody besides yourself, make sure it has value to them.

If you chose albums, acid free and archival are also the ticket. I have several traditional family albums that are a mess. I also have vast quantities of family photos back to the early days of photography. I know comparatively few of the people and am probably the last living person who knows even those few. Labeling is something there is always time to do later till there isn't any time left at all. Light pencil on the back will do.

Acid free archival storage boxes. But be sure to label the images / print with who or what, where, and when so they will be of some value to others in the future.

My parents left me a few old photo albums that have labelled pictures from my childhood, and other of relatives from their backgrounds. But there are also a lot of unlabeled prints. And from later years there are many loose prints and albums of their friends from after they retired and moved away. Even the labelled ones mean little to me as I never met the people. As we have no kids I don't know who will even want my old family photos. Since my parents were both the youngest in their families all my cousins already have the older family pictures. On and on. You get the idea.

Photo albums are passe. People are into scrapbooking now.

Check out craft stores for scrapbook covers. Then find acid-free paper pages for them, and create your own photo albums.

The scrapbooks tend to have 12” x12” pages which are a good size for 8x10 and smaller photos, and they are expandable, so you can add more pages.

I use acid-free photo pages (they come in many configurations) and put them in 3-ring binders. Then I write on the cover and on the spine what pictures are inside so that when they are standing on the shelf I can see that info.

It is all a question of volume. I have a more than a shipping pallet of boxes of photos and slides. I would have nowhere to shelve all the binders.

Are scrapbooks not also a form of photo album?
I still have quite a lot more photos to do, but so far have made scrapbooks/photo albums for several of the grand children. As much as possible, chronological order of the photos, and smallish blocks of writing on each page.
The kids love them and often when they come to visit, they'll grab one of the albums before they even say "Hallo Oma".
Most of the comments are not about the photos of themselves, but those of my childhood and before, my parents and grandparents and their generations.
One of the neatest things that has come out of this: One of the granddaughters, now 16 years old, looks very much like one of my aunts. This aunt passed away when I was about twelve years old. I see the likeness, and I have to photo of this aunt; putting that photo and one of my granddaughter side-by-side, she sees the likeness as well. It makes the old photos even more cherished!
Yes, soft pencil is good to note on the back: the date (if known), and the names of the people in the photo, and even how they are related.
