Adding and Searching Metadata

Looking for guidance in incorporating metadata into scanned digital image files.

Types of data I would like to tag:
Negative File Page #
Negative frame #
Location
People
Topic
Year
Any other suggestions?

I have 2 software programs that can edit metadata, Adobe Bridge and Photoshop. Attached are screen captures of the METADATA IPTC Core and KEYWORDS panels from Bridge.

How does a search work? Does a search focus on just a specific data item (such as “Creator”); does it search across all data in IPTC Core; or does it search across all the metadata in a file?

Do I need to create categories for each of these types of data, or just enter all data under “Description” or “Keywords” and the search will find them?

Would it be better to create a custom metadata template that would include the specific categories I am interested in? Would this include the file properties?

Before I start adding data I want to make sure I understand the entire process of tagging and searching, so that I am adding data in a way that can successfully and efficiently be searched.

Thanks Joe

I'd use Lightroom and make all those attributes as keywords, attributes that will be picked up in the exported file versions, as well as being searchable inside LR via the standard metadata filters. Any place you place the export images online are more likely to use the keyword "tags" than any other implementation. The "negative" data seems a bit overboard, I guess, depending on how you get your scanned files.
