Sony RX100 error

I have an issue with my Sony RX100 VI.

I have owned 3 versions of the RX100. It has been my go-to for casual occasions and always on my belt when I’m out with a big body mirrorless.

The RX100 has performed very well and been pretty much bulletproof. No issues….until now.

An error message has begun to appear – “E 91:01”.

From what I can tell, the flash is inop and the shutter now silent. Otherwise, it’s operable – again, from what I can tell. The error message flashes constantly.

I’ve read a number of fixes on the internet but to no avail. Some of the fixes: remove and reinsert the battery, hold the “on” button down for 2 minutes, reset the camera. Zip.

It appears the only solution is to send the camera in for repair. Something to do with capacitors. People are saying $300-400 for the repair.

Can anyone shed light on this issue?

Thanks for your help.

No clue how to fix it but now I will have nightmares worrying about it happening to mine.

If the capacitors are going bad, then it would seem replacement would be needed. Might try removing battery and letting camera sit for quite sometime, long enough for settings to disappear, date, etc., long shot, but cheap.
I'm no expert, but capacitors can dry out, etc., go bad, would think a camera would use ones that don't, but like all electronics sometimes bad batches, new type, etc. used which doesn't work out, think of the airbag deployers using ammonium nitrate instead of sodium azide. But unless its within the warranty period, a safety recall or the state has implied warranties, we the consumer get stuck. Toyota used a different/cheaper? steel in Tocoma truck frames a whike back, due to safety they are still replacing them (mine was done last fall, for a 10 year old truck with 183,000 miles on it.

Error E 91:01 signifies a problem with the flash

I haven’t received much in the way of advice here so this must not be a common problem.

The RX100 has been a great performer for me……..until this. I’ve had, I think, 4 versions of it.

The VI edition had an issue right away. The diopter adjustment would move on its own and had to be reset almost every time it was used. B&H replaced the first camera and, when the 2nd had the same problem, had me send it in for repair. The issue, I think, was that the adjustment knob was loosely fitted and moved when the EVF popped up.

I wonder if the flash, which also pops up forcefully, might have had something come loose.

I now use my finger to keep the flash and EVF from popping up too quickly.

I solved my problem by throwing money at it – I bought the VII version and this time I bought the 4-year warranty.

Thanks for the suggestion.

As I mentioned, I tried the recommended fixes without any luck.

I’ve now replaced the VI with the VII version so the VI will have a long rest and might correct itself.

Both the EVF and the flash pop up very quickly and I wonder if the hard stop they make could loosen or break something. I know for sure that was happening with the VI’s EVF right out of the box.

I’ll use a finger to more gently pop the EVF and flash on the new unit.

I did buy the 4-year warranty, something I rarely do, just in case.
