After many year of struggling with the installation of the main spring on OLD single shot shotguns I decided to make a spring compressor, all materials used were scraps out of the scrap bin.
The Loctite was used to hold the steel insert in the Aluminum since the threads were getting loose during function test.
The funny thing is this is probably the tool will only be used a couple more times since the newer shotguns use a mouse trap type spring. But, Better late than never!!!!

Thank you Bob
Since it's a tool that will see little use I opted for function over finish.
Manglesphoto, I enjoy your post as we both share the same hobbies, photography and firearms. Most of my working life I was a Mechanical Engineer. Having spent many years designing tools, I find looking at others designs enlightening. Keep up the good work.

Will it work for Ruger revolvers?
Frank, all these posts you have been making lately always make me laugh about something. When I was just 17, I bought a a double barreled shotgun with a Damascus barrel at a garage sale. Yes, I was only 17 and the lady sold me the weapon. No questions asked. Anyway, I would hunt with it on my sister's farm which is near Rushville, Illinois. My brother in law took it away from me because I was using 3 1/4 dram field load shells to hunt quail and pheasant. He yelled at me because he said it was meant for black powder only would unwrap itself with those shells and probably kill me. Here is the kicker: I will be 65 in March and he will still not give it back to me.
Tom
Oh, and I have been liking your posts of late.

Probably not since Ruger revolvers don't use the same setup as the old shotguns
I checked YouTube and the main spring strut in the Ruger is flat where this one is round.

LOL
I always shied away from Damascus barreled guns, but there were some real high quality Damascus barreled gun out there But not at the prices I could afford. However there were some gun that were made to look like Damascus that were perfectly safe for modern loads the way to find out was to scratch the barrel under the forearm and see it the pattern was gone.
Thank you very much Tom
I'M fighting boredom
Will be in search of a main spring to use in this gun, I need to reduce the tension to lighten the trigger pull without making the gun unsafe.Oh btw I turned 82 last Oct.
