In this post I present the changing countryside in the final hours of our drive on the first day: we have arrived at the higher altitudes and the mountains flanking our way portray themselves in their snowy finery. Then we make it to our hotel in Jarpo Town and - believe it or not, even though this is the wild western part of China - we are staying at a "Holiday Inn"! My images project a warm, cozy glow but the hotel was actually freezing cold, with the front door to the lobby wide open and the outside temperature at an altitude of about 2700 m/8900 ft hovering around 0C/32F. The rooms were well appointed but also not heated, and getting access to the internet entailed a trip down to the freezing lobby, which definitely kept our access time short. In our room, we resorted to having the hairdryer blowing all evening to provide a bit of heat, definitely a novel approach to room heating.

In the first part of this set we view the snow-clad mountains and landscape, in the second part the lobby of our hotel welcomes us with its deceiving, warm glow of the lights and attractive interior decoration elements.
