I took a chance... Had the money. DJI Smart Controller.

I received my Air 2s on December 7th. I have not had a whole lot of time to learn it even with time off from work because of high winds. So far I like it. It has a slightly larger screen than a smart phone. I do like the fact that it has a much brighter screen than a smart phone. This helps in bright light.

I'm used to using my phone, but would certainly consider that controller if I move up from a Mini 2.

How does it connect to the internet for google maps, etc.? WiFi with phone?

No phone needed. It does have many capabilities. It is like an Android Yes, to update, it uses WiFi. It also has its' own transmitter so that you can fly it anywhere. It also increases the transmission distance by switching between 2 frequencies as needed, much the same as if one uses a phone to hook up to the controller. I wish it would hook up to the mini, but I don't see that happening. However, it is compatible with a bunch of the other Mavics. The version I have has been updated I think via firmware from the earlier ones. "Equipped with OcuSync 2.0 Full-HD video transmission technology, the DJI Smart Controller supports automatic switching between 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz, reducing the influence of environmental interference on drone operation and image quality. This also ensures reliable long-range transmission at distances of up to 8 km" (whatever 8km equates too., Ha, ha!)

It will also hook up to the computer for downloading and uploading. It also has a micro SD slot that takes up to 256gig. you can also upload apps from the SD card if you wish to do so. Oh let us not forget that it has an HDMI port also. And so on and so forth.

Go to DJI;s website and it will answer many questions you may have. Of course YouTube videos. That is what I did. After wading through all of the opinions (both positive and negative), I chose the the combo that included the smart controller and extra batteries and so on. The carrying case pretty much sucks. I am going to have to spend up and get a nicer one. The ones that go for around $50.00 will do , but I would like to get a hard cover case.

You can also customize the buttons. I also like that it has a 2 & 1/2 hour charge. It can take fast charging also. It uses a USB type 2 connection. It takes quite awhile to recharge even with the fast charging, which I use. You can even customize the buttons and controls. Pretty cool, eh?

So far, I like it very much. Is it worth the extra $700.00? That would be up to you. I really was intrigued by it after reading up on it, so I saved a little extra money and pulled the trigger.

I hope this helps.

Tom

I was considering this controller for my mini 2. Now that I'm interested they are hard to come by. I saw one for $1200 and that's way overpriced for me. BH claims they're discontinued.

Hmmm... I did not look to see if the smart controller would work for the mini 2. Just like you, I was looking into the price difference between a regular controller using ones' smart phone vs. the smart controller. The smart controller added about $700.00 to the combo I wanted (I wanted all 3 batteries). I figured that I could do this. The downside would be that if I don't like the smart controller, I could always get the regular controller. Just more money. What is sad is that the controller that came with my mini won't work with my Air 2s. So far, I like the smart controller just fine.
