It's very nicely done. My bird pictures usually turn out to be shapeless black blobs, so getting shape, in my book, is doing well. I probably would have tried to lighten the shadows to get details in the bird, but I like it as it is. Others make better choices than I do!

If I like this photo. I was doing a series of tombstones, to be posted later today or tomorrow, and saw this bird on a tombstone. I took the shot but it was dark with no chance for another. After looking at it I decided to make it a black and white as that was pretty much what it was anyway. I sort of like the silhouette aspect of it. What do you think. I used my Sony RX10IV.

A nit pick might be that there is a lack of detail in the body of the bird. You mentioned that your intent was a Silhouette. The lack of detail would be consistent with a silhouette; but then there really would not be as much detail in the stone. Like I said, that is a nit pick. I do like this shot and I think the background is brilliant. Really nice.

Thanks for your comment. I did lighten it as much as I could.

I thank you for your comment. Actually, I did not say my intent was a silhouette at all. I said I liked it as a silhouette. This is a photo that went horribly wrong in the taking. My intent was a nice photo of what I believe was a white crowned sparrow. But it turned out too dark and I worked on it in post processing to make it into something acceptable. I think it turned out pretty well now. Thanks again.

Sorry I misquoted you. Either way, nice save.

This is the original. As you can see I have only cropped from the right to get rid of the brightness and lightened up the stone and bird, opening the shadows. . . .

I think this version is much more interesting than the first version you posted. This version has movement, direction, whereas the first version was static. Also, in trying to bring out detail, you created an unnatural halo at the end of the bird's tail; instead, you could have merely suggested some detail there. I would try creating some very soft rim lighting along the whole tail edge.
Just my take, of course. I also appreciate that you saw this moment and chose to capture it.

It does not appeal because the bird's face is not shown.

Checking closely there is/was a halo at the end of the bird's tail. I like that it gives some dimension to the tail. In my lightened version there is some detail in the shadow area. We may not completely agree but I do thank you for your comment.

Thank you for your comment. When I first started pressing the shutter the bird was facing somewhat toward me. Then, as tiny birds tend to do, it decided to change positions on me. Trust me that I would have loved for him to stay put. One second or less after the photo he had flitted to another location.

As a photo of a bird, the fact that it’s facing away would detract from the image. However, I really like this as a photograph telling a story with the bird looking away. I like the cropped version better, too. It provides an intimate sadness, as though the bird is searching for the lost.

And I also like the faint highlight on the bird’s tail, without which it would be difficult to distinguish the tail from the tombstone.

A good title can lead the viewer exactly where you want them to be.

I like it very much, Dennis!
The rear view of the almost silhouetted unaware subject is, to my eye, extremely effective!,
