Michael,
Thanks for the suggestions - much appreciated.

I shoot with a 70-200 f2.8; I'll play around with the shutter speed, but I'm trying to shoot 1/1000 whenever possible.

I actually may try pushing the ISO higher - as you said a little grain is better than blurred photos. I was shooting 6400-10000 with my D810. I will try going to 12,800 with my mirrorless Z6 next time. I have also heard/read where shooting higher ISO produces less noise (better to slightly overexpose) than to shoot lower ISO and adjust in post. My limited experience seems to reflect that recommendation. I typically shoot in JPEG.

I'm not so sure about shooting in AI-Servo; I've heard some pros can get away with it successfully. I know I'm not that talented. I shoot with AF-C (continuous) and typically short (2-5) shot bursts. I have tried BBF, but I "grew up" using shutter focus/release and have returned to that.

Have a Happy New Year

Canon's term for AF-C is AI-Servo. They're the same AF operation on the different brands.

Chicago,
I'm not making any suggestions about shooting gymnastics or your lighting situation, but I think some of these may salvageable. I applied some exposure adjustment and noise reduction (Neat Image) to your jpeg files, and they are not perfect, but the results of the noise reduction improve the image. If you had a RAW file, DXO could have done a better job of noise reduction. If you did not want me to adjust your photos, I apologize, but I wanted to illustrate what could be done using noise reduction software. I like the action in your shots.

Thanks - I should have remembered that for as much photography stuff as I've read, though I don't own a Canon. Now, I'll never forget...

Lorvey,
No offense taken; in fact thank you for showing me what could be done in post-processing. I was shooting JPEG (as is typical for me) instead of RAW. I know one can do much more with RAW, and it's always nice to see what others can do. I usually try to get it right in camera and minimize post processing only for the sake of time. I do like what you've done with the photos and it shows me that (whenever I retire) I have much more to learn and improve on.
Have a happy and healthy New Year
Stephen
