I am noticing, among the newer photographers particularly, that the concept of composition is frequently not evident. So today I am going to briefly touch on this subject.
I made the first picture while visiting Clear Creek in northern California.
I spent most of the day making about 8 pictures.
The first picture is the shot I finally took.
The second picture demonstrates my thinking while composing the image.
I hope this will give the patience to pause and think before clicking the shutter

Further, the image follows the Rule of Thirds quite well, as well. Well done. Well, I think that's enough "wells."

Is it me, or does the pond look higher on the left than the right? I live on the coast and am constantly screwing up the horizon when I shoot water scenes, so that was the first thing I noticed.
I really liked the diagram of your thought process. Patience is a really difficult skill to acquire, for me, at least.

No the pond is not higher on the left, however the picture was made from a relative low angle. Also no picture is perfect to all viewers so your observation is accepted without offense

Small ponds have small diameter curves so it won't look the same as a flat horizon on a large body of water.

henrycrafter, thanks for taking the time to explain many of the comments that other make. I have a friend who is getting into photo taking and has been coming over my house to learn "his camera". He has not learned how to hold the camera level. He asked to see some of my vacation photos and after about a dozen, he said now I see why I have to learn to level my camera.

Does the rule of thirds always apply?
I was at my brother-in-laws zoo & took some pictures. Attached is one of the photos that I cropped to move off center. Not sure which one I like the most.
Please critique so I can improve on future shots.
Thanks

The cropping is so minimal that I see no difference in the photos. I am taking a photo class and tonight the instructor said that rules were made to be broken, but for this class, if you break one, it better knock me off my feet. With people photos, I usually follow that rule however with landscape photo, I am not so fussy and as others have said on this forum, they are your photos and only you have to like them.
