Lightroom Edit As Layers In Photoshop Problem

Before I contact Adobe maybe someone here has had this problem. It could be I'm dumb and missing something obvious.
I've never used Lightroom before. Started using PS before LR came out so never gravitated towards it. Been hearing a lot about the new masking feature, so decided to check it out. My problem has nothing to do with that because haven't checked that out yet.
When I select some images and go to Edit As Layers In Photoshop, only one layer shows up in the Layers palette. Both images are open in the workspace. If I click on one, it shows in the palette and if I click on the other, it shows up, but only one at a time. I can still stack them manually. Is there something in the Preferences that I'm overlooking?
Thanks for any help.

I think you mean when you are in Lightroom and you have selected multiple files, you use Menu->Photos->Edit In->Open as Layers (or right click on one image in the selection and choose Edit In->Open as Layers).

I am having trouble understanding your comment "both images are open in the workspace"

If you are looking at the top of the "Canvas" both raw filenames will be listed, and the layer palette should show each raw file as a layer with the original source filename as the layer name.

Thanks for the response, Gene. I mean that both files are open, but unless I tile them, only one is visible at a time. Which is normal, no problem with that. The problem is, only one file shows up in the layers palette.

Just a guess, but I think you may be selecting multiple photos in LR, then right-clicking and choosing Edit In > Edit In Adobe Photoshop. Instead, right click, and choose Edit In > Open as Layers in Photoshop. On my computer, Open As Layers in Photoshop is at the very bottom of the list of choices after Edit In.

Only one file should be open in Photoshop. Just for grins and giggles grab 5 files in LR and open them as layers in PS just to see what happens.

Both Menu->Photos->Edit In->Open as Layers and right clicking on one image in the selection and choose Edit In->Open as Layers actually brings you to the same place in Photoshop - one image open, multiple layers in the layer palette, and at the top of the canvas, the names of the contributing LR files - each separated by a dash.

Maybe it'll be clearer with a screen grab. If you want to select multiple images in LR and open them as layers in PS, choose the bottom menu choice in the attached picture, not the top choice.

Seems to be a glitch with the latest PS 2022. I uninstalled it and it seems to be working in 2021. But now I have a checkerboard thumbnail at the bottom of the stack that says "load layers". Do you know what that is? I've never noticed it before.

So both images are open in the PS workspace and both images show in the list of layers on the right. You are correct that you can only see one of them at a time because you have not changed the opacity of either layer.

Select the layer on the top of the list. Then take the eraser and wipe out something. The layer below that should show up in the hole you made.

You could alternatively change the blending mode from Normal to something else to combine the images somehow.

I have assumed that both layers contain images of the same size.

Thanks for the response, but you must have misunderstood my post. The problem was only one layer was showing up in the layer palette. Anyway please read my previous post stating problem was with PS 2022 and problem fixed. Thanks

I have been using PS2022 without any problems. Trying to understand the problem. Have not seen a checkerboard dialogue saying “load layers “. Sounds like you switched back to PS2021 and that’s where you see the checkerboard dialogue.

Yes, the original problem that precipitated my topic was with PS 2022. Only one layer was showing in layer palette. Select two images>Edit In>Open As Layers In PS. That problem solved reverting to 2021. Then in 2021 I had the load layers thumbnail at bottom of stack. It stayed there the whole time I was working. Now, it comes on momentarily and then goes off. I guess it's PS just loading the layers. Don't know why it stayed on. Must have gremlins in my Mac. Seems to be working fine now. Will call Adobe tomorrow.

It's working on my system - the latest versions of both. I cannot duplicate what you have.
