Good article. I follow everything he suggests since I have bought my tripods for travel (under 2 pounds and only 14.5" long folded). The only other thing I do not think he mentioned is the choice of carbon fiber over aluminum.

Yes, the very small travel pods need all the help they can get !

I will second that notion! I took an aluminum tripod to Bryce Canyon, and our sunrise photo shoot was met with sub-freezing temperatures. I had forgotten to bring gloves, and let me tell you, cold aluminum and bare hands don't go well together!

I have seen similar articles before. Good advise nonetheless.
Do not consider a tripod an accessory because it is a necessity. VR has been quite a technological advance in lenses but a tripod slows down the operator and is an excellent tool for composition. Invaluable is a tripod when it comes to macro photography.
I have a cheap Dolica aluminum tripod ($45) that I often carry in my travels. I use good techniques with it and it has never failed to give me sharp images, even when I have used one of my dSLR cameras and a heavy lens. In regard to aluminum vs carbon fibers I guess it all depends on the photographer because both do an excellent job. A carbon fiber tripod could be lighter till a ball head is fit on it. I agree that aluminum in cold weather is not friendly to hands but the majority of the tripods today carry some form of foam covering in one of the legs allowing to hold the tripod in cold weather.
