Thanks. Very nice picture.

I wonder why a "included" app with Windows did not work for you?

It's almost 2022. I wonder when "people" will be able to "actually see it". Just a thought.

Windows required going into the app store and downloading additional software. Wasn't willing to do that. Wasn't worth my time or effort to do that when you could have just as easily attached a jpg format pic.

It puzzles me why some people feel it’s wrong to post images to a photography discussion site.

In fact under the Main Photography Discussion, forum rules, at the very top, is a link to “How to Post a Picture”.

Based on the rules it is completely appropriate to post images here, and the statement “shouldn't have been posted to Main Discussion” is wrong.

It is not wrong. If the Administrator sees images posted to the Main Discussion forum he will move them to the gallery...does it all the time.

You are right, I could have. But in my ignorance about Microsoft's inexplicable refusal to support an industry standard, I didn't bother. You can guess what that says about Microsoft. But many of us may remember that they do this sort of thing a lot and thus we should not be surprised. I'll stay with Mac, thanks anyhow.

After so many people said they could not open the picture I tried it on my wife's Windows PC, a very recent build. I was sadly surprised at how many programs could not do it. Notwithstanding one reply that said it worked in MS's Photos, it did not work on her PC. That may be because we have not put any helper apps like that on it.

So, for those of you who still want to see the JPG version, I went back to the saved in-process file and exported a full quality JPG. Here it is. I was surprised to see that the JPG file is slightly smaller than the HEIC. That is the opposite of what HEIC is supposed to be, if I understand the internet sources correctly.

HEIC is still in its usage infancy, something does not become a standard as soon as it come out.

Does Chrome or Edge support it yet? Firefox does not. Displaying an HEIC on the internet is a browser function.
AFTER it's downloaded, it would be an operating system function to display them.

So now that we've stopped arguing about stuff I did not mean to cause, I want to reiterate my rather small and simple point.

The camera has the tiny sensor common to many P+S cameras. It's the same size sensor, for example, as the Nikon P1000. It's an older model and only shoots JPG.

Its image quality does not compete well against, for example, my Sony RX10m4, let alone my Sony a6500. But on this particular day, it was the only camera I had with me that was working. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the picture is. It's not great. Its dynamic range is relatively low compared to bigger, more expensive cameras. It's crap in low light and so on.

But it beats the heck out of a cell phone simply because of the very good zoom lens. It fits in my pocket and has an automatic lens cap. There are newer versions available, btw. I'm not trying to sell cameras for Sony, just trying to show that small, relatively inexpensive and P+S cameras are nothing to sneer at. This picture looks good on my 27" monitor (BenQ). The exposure was tricky and I finally decided to let the camera help me. Since the subject was not moving much and had intervals of non-motion, I let the camera handle both aperture and shutter speed.

I'm merely trying to be helpful to those who may not be free-spending "enthusiasts", even though I come pretty close to that description myself.

Thread drift, but worth a response.

OK, so you draw a distinction between a standard that has been agreed upon by an industry group and one that is almost universally accepted. Potato potahtoh. 🥔🍠 Even the MS store said it was "widely used". To answer your rhetorical questions, those browsers can do it with extensions. I don't know or care why they are doing it that way; it's their business decision. I even read recently that Edge first did then didn't. Insert video of head scratching here.

I really was happy with Wordstar, once upon a time and I don't like most of the newer UI in Windows. I thought Windows 7 was the best they ever did but I gave in and installed "10" on my wife's PC's.

But then there is Canon two years ago..
https://petapixel.com/2019/10/31/canon-has-moved-on-to-heif-but-wont-ditch-jpeg-completely-yet/

https://www.techadvisor.com/how-to/photo-video/open-heic-windows-3664186/

This is from the tech advisor article..(emphasis added by me)
"...The format was developed by MPEG - not Apple - so it's not Apple trying to do its own proprietary thing. In fact, HEIC is slowly usurping the established (but old and flawed) JPG format.
Images with a .heic are compressed using HEVC, which is the high-efficiency video codec. These images are then stored in a HEIF file, which stands for High Efficiency File Format
There are lots of benefits of using HEIF files, even if it is a bit confusing that the file is called HEIC rather than HEIF.
Here’s why HEIC files are great:
Around half the size of JPG for the same quality
Can store multiple photos in one file (ideal for Live Photos and bursts)
Supports transparency like GIF files
Can store image edits, such as cropping and rotating so you can undo them
Support 16-bit colour vs JPG’s 8-bit..."

Thanks for the history.
It will eventually get there and be supported by more software at some point.
Not holding my breath though, no matter how 'cool, neat, efficient, and upcoming' it may be.
Regardless, it's not supported all over at this time.
Just another brick in the wall.

That's a good point.

Yet reading the Main Photography Discussion rules there is nothing about this. It should be stated there that the Main Photography Discussion is not for sharing images. The description under the topic should be updated as well. A better description would be "This is where we talk about anything related to photography but not for posting images".

Scattered support. Apple adopted it. I find at work that some PC users can read it. But right now it seems that the safest thing is to convert to JPEG before sharing.

Well, even if there were detailed, precise guidelines (instructions?) there will be people who will do what they want anyway. I think a big reason why things wind up in the 'wrong place' are people do not pay attention to the category (forum) drop-down or they don't care.

I never look to see in what category a post is located, I simply read the post.
The categories I subscribe to just feed my New Posts list.
Not even sure what categories I subscribe to at the moment.

The problem is that the rules posted in most forums are forum specific. The rules in the Main Discussion forum are not...they are general rules for all of UHH. However, the Administrator's actions in moving images from the Main Discussion forum to the Gallery on a consistent basis would indicate that they should not be posted there.

And I am not the only person who mentions this.

I'm not sure that topics being moved is entirely by someone reading each posting. I once used the term "political" in a posting that had nothing to do with politics, and it got moved to the attic in about a minute. I think that there is some algorithm going on that scans for certain things and either brings them to someone's attention or moves topics without human intervention.

I would agree in this case that the topic is really a nice picture that the OP wanted us to see. It moved into a discussion about formats that can be displayed, but the original purpose was to show us a picture.

Thank you. Very nice picture. I've been using Microsoft since the DOS days. From the very start they were always a day late and a dollar short.
