This link implies that gray market items are NOT the same as USA items.

Correct for repair work from NIKON directly. Even IF US model, IF the age is greater than 10 yrs, Nikon will not repair usually, since they don't keep the parts...so one must find a third party or authorized dealer who has spare or surplus parts for repairs. That has been my experience with Nikon. Oh and the 500mm lens I had repaired cost $1K to fix!

They're made in the same factories by the same people with the same parts. I've compared grey market Canon gear with Canon USA imported gear and they are the same.

No one said that... the serial numbers will disallow Nikon [ specifically] from repairing ...

the units are the same, agreed... the warranty is NOT and more...Nikon does not allow transfer of warranty,,

so IF you have a problem, take it up with Nikon.

I find it very interesting that none of the stores or companies buying and selling used camera gear ever mention a word about the gear being grey market. They never ask when buying and never mention what they are selling you when you buy used from them. Prices are based on the items and not where they came from. I really think it does not matter to them or anyone else in the least. Seems to be more hyped up false information the so called experts like to rant about on the various forums to keep themselves entertained. Some will go to their grave believing it all true. There is false information to be found on any kind of forums. I think maybe gun forums are pretty much tied with camera forums when it comes to people wanting to impress with their intelligence. This post might possibly cause some to melt their keyboards defending the grey market BS but common sense tells you it means nothing to buyers and sellers of used equipment. I don’t mean to trigger any of you but for some it only takes a post on any camera related subject and you are ready to chime in and write a book filled with your knowledge. CHILL! I posted this for the people that have been brainwashed about grey market. It only matters for warranty work. God bless all of you and just enjoy your photography. Happy Thanksgiving

The B&H link explaining their grey market goods goes into the video format differences in different regions, NTSC versus PAL in particular. The interlaced NTSC and PAL formats of the past were not compatible. The only difference now of questionable significance is that HD and 4K video have different frame rates here and in Europe, typically 60 fps here or 50 fps there. I'm going to show you one of the menu settings on the back of my Nikon D810 with captions I provided. I can shoot in either format. I would also venture to guess that if the video is saved as an MP4 file, it will play on any device, computer or TV, that can play MP4 files anywhere, and the frame rate will be adjusted in playback. B&H does sell some dedicated PAL equipment, but it is labeled as such.

Why would you say that? Only unscrupulous companies would pass off new grey market items as authentic. Reputable companies flag the grey market items in one way or another.

Re used gear, since grey market usually only affects manufacturer’s warranty work, and used items rarely come with a manuf warranty, in that case, why does it matter?

In the case where a manuf will not work on a grey market item period, then the buyer should ask the seller the status, and a reputable used seller will advise the correct status.

Trying to use a nice fancy word to replace "[i]gray market]/i]"....[/quote]

Some use "international" rather than "imported".

“International”, “Imported” all are clues that the item is “grey” market.

But since all cameras today are imported and international it does somewhat confuse people.

Remember, the grey market issue is only a Nikon issue.
Canon, at least, will fix your gear regardless. The only problem is that if there is a failure during the warranty period you will have to pay for the repair.
So please note that the issue is with Nikon products and NOT an issue with other brands.

For the most part it's easy to know if the equipment is gray market if you buy new. If you buy used how do you know for sure if they are not gray? For used the warranty is irrelevant but if I buy Nikon they won't service gray market stuff.

When I buy a used or refurbished Nikon Product, I purchase it either directly from Nikon USA or my local dealer (Allen's Camera) who is an authorized Nikon dealer and careful with the sources of their used purchases. If Nikon refuses to register it, which has not happened yet, it would be returned to the seller. If I were to purchase something I wasn't able to get repaired when/if necessary, it would not be very useful to me. I recently sent my D5 in for (potentially) its third major repair along with a lens to be repaired under the previously issued extended warranty. Both items have seen heavy use since new. Best of luck.

I never worry about repairs since I have never needed one in 16 years. Much of my gear is used and beyond any warranty other than the reseller’s warranty. I feel that I am way ahead and if the item is unrepairable it gets to be a paperweight. This stuff is so darn reliable anyway and unlike a vehicle will hardly ever be in for repairs.
