ah yes.......
Dated a girl in HS (early 60s) whose dad had a late war production 46, I think, Willis. I was the only kid he ever let drive it because I could deal with no synchronization in any gear going up or down. Had to double clutch or crunch. Really fun cruising the drive in.
I'm English but now live in San Diego. Back in the day, in the UK, it was unheard of not being able to drive a "manual" car! Automatic cars were concidered something of a luxury. Pretty much every one took their driving test in a manual. In fact, you could take the test in an automatic, but that would only license you to drive those cars. If you wanted to get a manual transmission car, you had to re-take the driving test, but this time in a manual. I found it really bizarre when I moved here (15 years ago), and realized that the majority of people could not drive a stick shift!
I wonder what they would do with a paddle shifter?

Everyone could pretty much drive a stick back then...
But my truck was finicky...if you did not slip it perfectly from 1st to 2nd...it would jam up every time.
I had it down pat after a bit.
So...
My dad had his caddy in the shop (of course), and he was late for a meeting. He walks past me and asks to borrow my truck...no problem...keys handed over. I was over being fed by Mom...so more reason to stay and fill up.
No more than three minutes later my dad comes into his house in a huff...
WTH is wrong with your truck? It's stuck down the road!!
I ran down there...lifted the hood...unlocked the linkage...ready to go again.
Dad was giving me guff as to why I would not have that repaired...!
I just said...imagine you were a thief.
He got it right away.
I had to drive him to the meeting...missed some Mom food...bummer.

Mom food is always good food. I used to drive/own a Mack B61 with a tri-plex trans. three sticks. Took a while but once I got it was smooth sailing.
