Location shoot

Yesterday after work I did a shoot with Stacy Rusch, lovely lady, great fun to work with. We shot under the Bridge of Hope in Sauk Rapids, one of my favorite places to shoot in the St Cloud area. I was trying out a new piece of kit, a 25” collapsible beauty dish with a front diffuser and an AD200 strobe with round head. I think it’s going to become my go to light for outdoor/location portraits.

Nice! I like photographing women in hats.

Hats are hard to deal with sometimes, you have to find a way to get light up under the brim.

Interesting groupings! Have you thought about editing the lines on her face (in the first photo)? Of course it’s up to the subject whether she likes a smooth face or one with “character”. I’ve found that out for myself.
With hats, try to put your light higher (for better/fuller shadowing) or lower (to eliminate shadows).
Keep having fun!

The boots, hat and jacket is like her uniform. Stacy raises and trains horses. If you edited the lines on her face, it would no longer be Stacy.

I learned about that when I automatically edited out a mole once. My subject was upset with the result. So I’ve learned to offer options! ;)

Yes, a lot of people find things like moles and scars are part of their known public image and would not want them removed. I usually turn the healing brush down to 10 to 15% and go over things like that with a swipe or two to tone them down but not erase them.

Wayne the first image is absolutely Fabulous!
Stellar exposure... Superb balance between subject and background.
Chic Wardrobe Styling! (love the muted cool blue tones of Stacy's Long-Sleeve Pendleton Shirt in Grey & Blue Plaid)
The butterfly necklace adds a delightful "feminine" touch...

Great makeup artistry and perfectly shaped brows...
Wayne this is one of your finest (commercial quality) efforts!

The second image is delightful albeit the illumination ratio between subject and background it a tad high.
For most commercial work it's best to subdue the effect of the flash to bring it close to ambient... Hope this makes sense.

In the third image Stacy's hand actually appears larger than her face... not good, always try to have the talent push their face forward (as in the forth image) so the face is the Dominate component. Here you may have to direct the talent... Agency models know how to best present themselves to the lens, not so with many of your other clients.

As for the fourth image? Yep millinery is a bear to deal with... That is why their are AD's (Art Directors) on commercial assignments. I typically use a Nikon SB700 speedlight in SU-4 (Remote Mode) on the floor angled up toward the talent's face (with Wide Panel deployed and diffusion Dome)

Note: The pose dynamic used on the fourth capture is typically referred to as "Rabbit Ears" with the legs and feet "up" behind the talent's head (best to avoid this scenario if at all possible)... Yes it's commonly used, but just don't go there k?

Wayne I greatly appreciate the dog and pony show of the 25” collapsible beauty dish with a front diffuser and an AD200 strobe with round head. Yep, this appears to be a real winner! Really super nice to see the kit used in this enchanting series.

Looking forward to my of your stellar portraiture Wayne!
Cheers! Thomas
