Chest beating? I'm not a masochist.

You take a risk when you buy anything really. However, I have had Nikon equipment, bodies and lenses since the early 70s and never had a need to repair a lens, except for one time and that was a new lens in the last 8 years. All the others are still working just fine. How many readers have had to have lenses repaired, compared to the one who never have? Too much worry about grey market stuff, in my mind.

Best or most popular? Big difference between the two. The best equipment is what you are happiest with. Some people like i phones

Same with me - many cameras, no fails in the same time period. Lenses, too. It's just that if a gray market item does need repair, you're out of luck.

A lot of people seem to think that CHG_Canon's remark is a taunt against Nikon, but it's factual in that Nikon is the one brand who will not repair gray market gear at any price. Most other makes will repair gray market gear but charge you even if it is under warranty.

Yes - an unfortunate situation. It's the American division of Nikon that won't do the repairs. They make a profit from importing and selling gear. They figure that if they don't make the profit from an item, why repair it for free.

If you told a child to not touch a hot stove, and then they did, what would you say to them again: don't touch hot stoves.

Would the child question their self-worth as a photographer or a human? Would the child think they and their camera equipment were being called failures?

Ponder those questions as you ponder comments on the internet ...

CHG_CANON, as you may have guessed, is a Canon supporter, and his replies are often extremely supportive of that brand. He's not being mean or domineering. He just likes Canon, and he takes every opportunity to somewhat humorously promote their equipment. Those who always read his posts realize this and take those comments with a grain of salt.

I think we all know that it doesn't matter what brand of gear you use. I've been using Nikon since about 1970.

I really don't know you, so I have to rely on instinct. Sometimes, you put posts on here that seem to be quite informative, then, at times, you ruin your image (in my eyes!) when you make statements like you did in this post. I would think you would know that Canon and Nikon both produce outstanding gear. I find it distasteful for anyone to so blatantly put down Nikon and, in effect, Nikon users. I may not be the awesome photographer you are, and I surely am not the "all knowing, intelligent person" you like to portray. But, I would not put down any camera brand or any user of a camera brand as you have done repeatedly. I put very little faith in what you say anymore. Oh, and by the way, I started out my "hobby" of photography with Canon gear. I switched to Nikon, and never looked back, I am perfectly satisfied with Nikon, understanding that I will never reach your stature as a photographer. Have a good day, Sir.

I think the guy was just joking...sheesh. Besides, whatever his personal opinions, the man knows a great deal about photography and is very generous with sharing his knowledge.

"Foe" is a local way of pronouncing "for." I hope you're not making fun of us hill folks.

Many of my quite well educated friends here in the south tend to drop the 'r's from their speech. I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma where they didn't talk like that. However dropping 'g's was quite common. i.e; goin' rather than going. Lest all have a glass or sweet tea and be friends.

They wouldn't even repair for a fee.

When we used to drive to FL, we would get to a certain point where the waitress would ask if we wanted sweet tea. We knew we were in the south.

I worked for a couple of summers in NH, and the people got a kick out of my NY accent. Which reminds me - We were camping in Cape May, and we went to the boardwalk. There was a place that dressed people up in old costumes and took their pictures. They all had Irish accents - imported workers for the summer. We asked the young lady working with us where in Ireland she was from. "Oh, I'm not from Ireland. I picked up the accent working with all the Irish kids."

Right, and that is intended to encourage people to buy USA Nikons.
