Repost of an Old Picture That Was Cropped Wrong

I posted this picture several years ago. It won an honorable mention at a local juried show. At the time I was not real familiar with printing as far as aspect ratio cropping off my photo. I was kind of horrified when I realized what a bad crop I had entered! I am much more proficient at printing now.

Here is version originally posted here and the correctly cropped one. It is one of my favorite pictures.

This is only my opinion, the original versions is more appealing to me.

I can appreciate that. When looking at the two side by side I thought some might think the second one is too busy. Why is it you like it better?

Thanks for looking and thanks for your comment.

It all depends on what you are wanting to convey. If the scene, the second is better; if a character study of the individual, the first is better. Since you prefer the newer version, I assume you want the photo to convey the scene.

The second one looks good, lonedog, and I think jaymatt's got it. If you give an unedited photo to four people, I'll bet you get four different crops back. It depends on how a person sees it.

Yes. I sure will. I tried many crops. Thanks for your feedback!

The original image shows and reveals more of the place those persons are without hiding the fact that the first person on the right demands attention. The cropped image is a totally different view where only the persons are there without a hint for the location. The interest on that first person on the right is there but tells nothing to the viewer of where he is. In my humble opinion it is a less striking image.

Understand, and it has been discussed, that we all see and judge according to our taste. In a competition there are usually several persons judging the photographs and they not always agree. In this particular case I do not like the way the image was processed but it is not my image and it is not my art.
It is a great photograph and as I said I believe the original has more impact.

I prefer the original - great capture!
It holds my interest longer than the cropped version; I don't find it too busy.
Both are really well done.

I like them both as they show two different aspects of the same scene. I think your processing of the second one shows greater skill though.
