Yep! Too confusing. If only they could settle on one kind of connector for everything. I must have a hundred cables - all different kinds, yet I have trouble finding the type I need.

USB and all the rest have done a terrible job with cables and connectors. Every time I buy a new device I get a cable that I toss into a drawer. Some are never needed until a download or upgrade is needed.
Recently, I decided I needed to organize and catalog the cable drawer. First I did a big research project to ID all of them -- USB 1, 2, 3, & 4: USB mini & micro: Firewire 400 and 800: Thunderbolt 1, 2, 3, & 4; etc, etc. Some are backward compatible and others are not. Some gained favor and then died on the vine. Different computer and device makers tried out their favorites with varying degrees of success. It's just a big mess. At least all of mine are now organized, segregated, and labeled for future use on the various devices that I own and use.

I recently had to upgrade my 2012 Mac Mini to a current M1 Mac Mini, as a result of which the 4 traditional USB 3.0 ports I had on the old one became 2 Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports (up to 40GB/sec) and 2 of the traditional USB A ports running at USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10GB/sec).
That meant I needed some new cables. When I carelessly ordered a pair of USB-C ended cables of the desired length at a good price, I failed to notice the fine print in the listing that said their data transfer rate was only USB 2.0 (480MB/sec.) So those are going back, and I got some USB 3.2 Gen 2 cables to replace 'em. (USB 4 cables are MUCH more expensive, and I don't anticipate having any peripherals that will need the extra speed - if I ever DO get something that can use the speed, I can get the appropriate cable at the time.) I read the fine print on cable listings a LOT more carefully now.

Didn't I see in the news this morning that the EU is acting to standardize those ports in the future?
