Went for our walk in the park yesterday and my wife and I knew this wasn't one of the ducks that hang around the cement pond. Some kind of heron?

All I had with me was my little compact -- one step closer and it flew away so this is the best I got.

This is a great egret. A similar species is the snowy egret, which has a black bill and yellow feet. There are various immature birds which can be confused as well - immature reddish egrets and great blue herons may lack pigmentation and thus look sort of like these.
