A-DEP

Anybody remember and wish to comment on the A-DEP mode on older Canon EOS ? Arguably it had disadvantages but was pretty cool to pick foreground and background points and camera would determine aperture to ensure correct DOF. Of course you had no control over shutter, but for newbies wanting to get a certain area into acceptable focus, it did offer something ! OK, not mind expanding, but better than endless pages of discussion of which system is best...

MrBob you might look into this app... It's available for mobile devices now.
https://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

I shot for a stock agency for over a decade back in the 1970's primarily using Hyperfocal distance distance.
That works extremely well!
Those who shoot vintage glass also have the benefit of DOF markings on the lens itself.

Thank you for sharing this intriguing bit of Canon history...

I had older EOS with A-DEP and experimented with it. I just never felt it did all that good job, thought it was pretty heavy-handed, and stopped using it.

I seem to recall a smartphone app called DOF Master. If it is still around, it could possibly help with getting settings for the desired depth of field.

Thanks Thomas... just reminiscing and thought about this feature from the past. I have evolved and now use DOF tables ( not so much ) Ha Ha... and focusing 1/3 of the way into the frame, Preview button etc... but I thought it was an interesting feature and thought worth mentioning.

Thanks for bringing that up. I looked at my my t3i and it has it. Don’t remember ever playing with it. Will now. Not on my 80d.

Wow - I wouldn't have remembered it if you hadn't mentioned it.
