Question about selling equipment
I have never sold anything to anyone other than in cash in person. How generally does it work on here in the classifieds? How do seller and purchaser make sure they both get what they wanted?
It's easy lonedog...just give an accurate discription of the camera and how much you are selling it for, look on line and see how much that camera is selling for, don't forget to give the shutter count.

The seller and prospective buyer hash out the method of payment through discussion, sometimes utilizing UHH Private Messages. Sometimes sellers want a check mailed, and they promise to send the item after the check has cleared the bank. Or, the seller may want a funds transfer, such as Zelle or PayPal. Decide what method you're comfortable with and negotiate. I believe you can even check the buyer's satisfaction rating on UHH in his/her profile and the buyer can check the seller's as well.
I have bought and sold items both here and on eBay. As mentioned already, payment method is up to you as the seller to define (i.e., check-only; PayPal only; etc.), or to agree on through negotiation. PayPal charges about 3%, so that cost can be included in the selling price or a separate line item. Shipping, as well, can be included or added on top. You just wait until the money has cleared before shipping the item.
The other side of the question, about both parties being satisfied, is more ambiguous. You may know that eBay has a buyer protection policy that generally favors the buyer in any dispute over performance, etc. To my knowledge, UHH has no such protection. While we like to believe that we are all upright and honorable people, and while all of my personal transactions have been satisfactory, i am have no absolute guarantee that I could do anything if I bought a clunker.
One last thing. My personal approach is to price items on UHH on the low side, in deference to the group and the relative ease of the transaction. Others take the opposite approach, and try to get top dollar. You can decide how you want to do this. For pricing, check the eBay SOLD transactions, not the current postings.
I've bought and sold here at UHH as well as ebay and craigslist. I've had people who wanted to receive or pay with a check. That doesn't make the transaction safer vs electronic PayPal, but does make the process a lot slower.
PayPal is the default payment method. They take a fee of 2.9% plus $0.30 USD per sale. The payer should 'code' the transaction as a payment for service or tangible item, so the seller / payee receives a net $96.80 on a $100.00 sale. Then, if the payer / customer doesn't receive the item or there's an issue, they can ask PayPal to get involved in a resolution. If the seller wants a certain amount after fees, they should gross-up their selling price to account for that loss of fees.
eBay is pretty strict about the accuracy of a for-sale listing, allowing the purchaser to reject an item that doesn't meet the stated condition, specification, etc. You don't have those protections in 'private sales' such as UHH or Craigslist. If anything seems 'off' about the transaction, the concerned party should simply walk away.
Finally, and I learned this early on UHH, one has to consider the shipping cost(s) in developing their for-sale listing. A good post states the shipping method and the seller has accounted for that cost in their total 'for sale' price. Personally, I like the USPS prepaid 2-day boxes that come in multiple standard sizes with $100 insurance for a modest price. It will cost a lot more to ship via FedEx or USP if you can't fit the item into a USPS box. Depending on the sale / size, shipping could eat a third of the payment if not properly accounted for when setting the sale price.
I've sold a large printer here, and purchased several camera bodies. In every case, I agree with CHG_CANON in that PayPal is the way to go. It worked very well for me. In addition, start a conversation with the buyer or seller via private chat. Why? Sincere sellers/buyers will respond rather quickly, and will dialogue in an adult genuine fashion. Scammers won't. Ask several question, so you can learn more about the product, and about the other person. Then trust your instincts with the responses. It has always worked for me, and my smallest sale for me was $900, and for camera bodies, about $500. Worked every time. OH, look to see how "new" the UHH members, and the number of postings. If they 'just joined', don't get scared, but be cautious. We were all new at one time. But scammers will always be new. That is where the dialogue really helps.

Buying and selling on UHH is really the best method. I have bought and sold many items here (I have a lens for sale currently) and am always amazed at what good people we have here. My purchases have always been very clean and well operating, and my sales have always been happy with me. Most important is to be honest and forthright in the description of your item. If you treat your camera equipment with respect, you will want to find them happy homes when you are done with them. What people said above about PayPal is accurate. If someone asks you to send the money "friends and family", politely decline. We all know that the cost of the protection is worth the 3% fee, and are happy to absorb that cost. As for shipping, I almost always use Fedex, because it is convenient for me, and the product is well tracked and delivered quicker than the US Post Office. But that preference is up to you. Good Luck, and I can't wait to see what you are selling!!

All good suggestions.... one more for going the PayPal route. As a buyer, I usually request an invoice from the seller. It's the easiest way to add credibility to the transaction. Certainly, not necessary but worth the time and effort especially if a dispute arises. It's an easy and convenient way to document the entire transaction.
