A Movie Moment

I can relate to Clark Griswold. As I cut off a piece of overhanging sheathing from my roof yesterday, it swiveled, fell, and knocked down the ladder. There I was, on the roof with no way down. I figured my son would stop by and say goodbye before he went to work. Fortunately, I saw the 8' ladder inside the screen room, and I was able to climb down and use that.

The picture below is actually a Christmas decoration based on the movie.

Yes, it did cause some concern.

I had a similar display a few years back. Around Halloween the farm stand was closed. I had a 15' orchard ladder. I hung a pumpkin in a maple tree near the road and had a dummy at the top of the ladder reaching for it. The ladder was placed at about 30 degrees off vertical (in the direction that the dummy was reaching).

Another display on the farm one Halloween: I had a pile of compost, which I was going to spread on the field next to the road. I dumped it all on the field and made a cone shaped pile about 6' high. Put a couple road cones on the top for horns and a couple hubcaps for eyes with short pieces of 2x4 for eyebrows (in an angry configuration).

I considered an amendment to the angry compost display but decided against it because it (1) would have produced a lot of 911 calls and (2) it was too much work. I had some old telephone poles in the back of the farm. One of them was broken. I considered making a couple arms reaching up and breaking the one pole that was broken, then adding some strings to simulate power lines, draping down onto the field.

Those safety people (OSHA) recommend tying the ladder so it will not fall and to use the ladder on level ground. For some reason I only do that at work.

If only I had known. : ) If it weren't for that piece of wood pivoting, it wouldn't have hit the ladder. If I had hung from the edge, I would almost reached the ground.
