I am here enjoying my Oreos and milk and I am thinking of Engineer Bill.
1956, 10 years old.
Sure enough, there are youtube videos of the show.
Ok, Flash Gordon on Saturday mornings, 1954, 55.
Dems were the days.

Those were great days!! You missed the radio days. Too long a list to mention all: Jack Armstrong, Superman, Sargent Preston, The Shadow, Green Hornet, The Quiz Kids, ...
I think all generations have these feelings about "days gone by".

Thanks for your post.
Mark

I used to go with my grandson's Boy Scout troop to the Pierce Brothers cemetery in Thousand Oaks and one day while planting Memorial Day flags, I came upon "Engineer Bill" Stulla's grave. Boy did that bring back memories of Red Light, Green Light.

Tom Corbett and the Space Patrol on Saturday morning radio, sponsored by Wheat Chex and Rice Chex cereal. Send in a box top and a couple of dollars and get a clear plastic “space hemet” with blow up plastic “air tanks”

Yes, once we relied upon the power of imagination to turn words heard on the radio into highly entertaining fantasies.

There were special people who understood the use of inflection, pacing, intonation, and volume to communicate. I've mostly heard recordings of their efforts, as an adult. I was born in '55, too late for most of the long form radio shows.

I had a sheet of rubbery plastic reusable film that I would put on the television screen that came with an erasable marker. It was sold as a "Tom Terrific" membership club item. At the end of the episode, Tom would get into some type of situation that he needed MY HELP getting out of by me drawing what I was told to and where to draw it on the screen.

My sister and I would lay in our bunk beds and blast off with Captain Video and his Video Rangers! And yes, of course we had our Captain Video rings.

The mid-50's children TV show, Winkie Dink and You also had a similar idea with the plastic film on the TV set, see:

Be well! Ed
