The day I spend that much for a camera is . . . . Well, you know.

Only Canon knows why it does what it does...which seems appropriate.
Is the R3 a Sony A1 killer....ummm no...not at all.

It does compete with the Sony A9II however in specs...why Canon came in at such a high price tag is unknown...but they have decided it will sell...which is all that matter to them in the end...like every other company which makes products.

I'm sure Canon will come out with something that can dethrone the Sony A1...nature of the game.
And then Sony will top that...and on it goes.

The loser here is...Nikon...a company desperate for everyone to slow the heck down...but they aren't doing that.

What kind of fool buys a $6000 camera when he can spend that on a good fishing adventure? Seriously though, I imagine that the camera is spectacular in every way. If I were in the business of photography, need low light capabilities, sports, etc. I'd go for it. And I'm happy to see innovation in the photog world. In the mean time, there are big fish to be caught.

Fishing adventure surely you jest!!! I'd rather on a thermal fishing trip, much cheaper and fun too....This is the only way to fish.....

Quite the video. He makes valid points about the differences between them....

I am guessing that, to achieve the high ISO sensitivity and the high burst rate they had to compromize on the megapixels. Even at 24 MP that is a massive amount of data to be pushing into the buffer memory and then to be written onto a fast memory card at 30 images per second. I'm sure the camera companies, imaging chip manufacturers and memory card makers are all working on overcomming such limitations for ther R1 or R3 MK II when it comes out in a few years.

When I wrote "wow" I was really referring to the capabilities of the camera rather than the price. But I can see how it can refer to both.

With the ISO capabilities I would think you could take great pictures in very low light. Maybe one could night fish and get a great photo of his or her fish.

The best scenario is to have the money and the time to photo and fish. I don't have time to do either. Well, I do to a certain extent. But I am just very impressed with the apparent capabilities of this camera.

I am a little bit surprised, but not too much, that the megapixel count is only 24.1. But it is my experience that the mexapixel count isn't much of the story in determining the value of the picture. Anything over 18 megapixels I think has the ability to take great pictures. On the other hand, with the wonderful capabilities of the camera I do wonder why they didn't also bump the megapixel count up to at least 34. Well. I have no doubt that it is going to be a great camera. I wonder if it will be so popular that it is hard to keep it in stock?
When I wrote "wow" I was really referrin... (show quote)

I think they view 24mp as kind of the sweet spot for sports photographers, who this is designed for. A lot of these guys are shooting JPEG’s that they’re transmitting to their editors and don’t want to deal with those big files.

I may take this up. Long range deep sea makes photography seem cheap!

If you had purchased an EOS 1D model in the past, you wouldn't find the price shocking, nor if you'd purchased one of Nikon's similarly priced 'pro' models.

So how much is the R1 when it time comes?

I recall earlier this year when the R3 was first being mentioned, the speculation was that the price was going to be close to $9,000. So the fact that Canon introduced the R3 at $5,999 it is well priced.

I recall 2012 when I purchased my Canon 5D MK II, the 1Dx was listed at $6,999, so the R3 is a real bargain.

Yes, and a lot of iphones or androids now have 108 megapixel cameras in them, and some are quite good, but they still don't come close to the abilities that the most professional cameras have.

I am a Canon guy but after my one experience with a Zeiss lens, I would take that money and buy a top shelf Sony with the best Zeiss lens I had money left over... Yes, I can get lenses for Canon but not AF...

This camera is for professional use not casual photography or hobbyists (unless they just have a boat load of money to spend).

The price is very reasonable for what the camera is and what it does, and I say this as a Nikon shooter - The R3 seems to be a very impressive camera and fully worth the price to those that have need of its functionality.
