Not sure, but it could be me.
Last time I got down that low for a photo, it was of a rattlesnake, and the result was worth the effort and discomfort, as is your striking photo. Thank you.

Nice shot, he looks like he was keeping an eye on you.
Did you get a little cotton mouth while shooting?
Just some info about how I got this shot. Went down to Stephen C Foster State Park for a 3 day weekend. We were driving down the Suwannee River Sill when we spotted this cottonmouth beginning to cross the road. We stopped about 15 feet pass it and got out to photograph. Snake had it’s head up about 4 inches looking at us and I started to shoot but did not like the angle and remembered what I had learned from Jared about shooting at eye level. As the snake did not look like it wanted to interface with me I laid down on the roadway about 10 feet off of it’s right side. Shooting with my Canon 1DX Mark II and a Sigma 60-600 lens I was hoping to capture the snake with it’s tongue out. One of my companions asked if I wanted him to engage the snake to get it to open its mouth and I told him that I did not want to harass the snake just to get a money shot. And yes being 72 it took me a few seconds to get down and a few more seconds to get up, but I never felt threaten by it.

The download is superb! Thanx for sharing.
Great shot of a fearsome snake.
You have been lucky in your dealings with cottonmouths...ask any SF dude who has ever trained at Camp McKall, N.C. about how friendly these things are. Ask any woodsman, any soldier, literally anyone who has any experience with them.
