I think it is a sphinx moth and the underside of the wings are a red color. Great capture

I probably should have turned it over when I had a chance. Thanks for looking and commenting, James.

Beautiful detail in your shot, Vicki, and I love his soft color. He certainly looks like a Hawk Moth.

Many thanks, Carol. I thought it looked like a Hawk Moth until I saw some clear photos in later posts.

Thanks, John. I’ve always had a particular fondness for the larger moths that aren’t likely to get in the pantry or eat wool.

I first thought this was a leaf and was glad I didn't step on it as it lay (stood?) on the horse arena footing. When I reached down to pick it up, it immediately climbed on my finger. It didn't seem particularly anxious to leave when I coaxed it onto a board in the barn. The body is about 1.5 inches. Since it didn't spread its wings, I'd only be guessing that the span is 3" give or take.

Any of you insect experts have any additional information or ID to impart?

beautiful discovery and shot, vicki!
