I bought tractors to fill a particular need (kind of like how I buy lenses). The tractors were specialized. There were tractors for power use (plowing, disking, material handling), tractors for general use (mowing, moving equipment, harvesting) and narrow wheelbase tractors for getting between crops (seedbed prep, cultivating, harvesting) and one toy tractor to keep the customers' kids busy.

Kinda like hand tools. But it depends on the application (requirement), the end result.

Various lenses will yield different results. I select the lens based on the results I want.

Go into a camera shop and ask for a lens to shoot children.
They'll be real glad to sell you one for infants, one for youngsters, and one for teenagers.
After one eyebrow goes up.

We have so many talented people here, that I'm sure this would be an easy job for someone. We need a lens chart.

Let's say I'm going on a cruise. What lens should I bring? What's the best lens for taking pictures of bugs? Jewelry? Stars? Cars? Pens? Shoes? Grandchildren? Parents? Portraits? You get the idea.

We get so many questions about what lens to use in specific situations that having a large - very large - chart listing lenses and uses would be a real benefit for our members.

No, I'm not being serious, still, the questions continue.

Awful complicated and large, brand, speed, sensor size, weight, view you want, focus range, all to be considered, just think about what you do deciding on going on a trip, what do I need and what would I like to have with me?

SO glad my walk-around lens is an 18-200.
Life is simple.

I'm planning a trip, up to 2 bodies, and 5 lenses, not sure about #6, and a compact camera too, BTW.

Shouldn’t a photographer have an idea what they are going to use the lens for before they buy it? Shouldn’t a photographer have a basic understanding of what ultra wide, wide, normal, telephoto and super telephoto lenses are used for before they start buying lenses? There are many books (and probably YouTube tutorials) on lenses and types of photography available that a beginner can access. There is really no need to ask what lens to use when with a little bit of effort they can find it out on their own.

We don't need charts - they can be confusing.

Funnels - symbolic ones - are necessary to narrow all of the choices. First funnel needs what camera. Second is cost. Third funnel used or new. Fourth funnel might be zoom or prime. Next funnel needs to be weight/size. All of these funnels can narrow choices down to a handful of lenses. Another way to look at this is what are the priorities.

Notice - most people asking the question rarely care about image quality. And they are often willing to prioritize convenience over image quality.

Simple answer, when it is a car photo trip, my Wife suggests I bring everything. The most I have brought, 3 bodies 5 lenses. That from widest to second longest tele, the old Nikon 600 5.6 ED is just too awkward. Horses for Courses!

Your choice isn't it.

I'm lucky in that respect. My wife just wants me to take pictures, she doesn't care with what or how.

If I take pictures she complains about the delay, If I don't she complains about not having a shot.
