Old Netbook

Remember Netbooks? There were small, very basic computers that were somewhat popular years ago. I came across mine yesterday from (Acer Aspire, 2013, $240) and it still works - more or less. The battery doesn't seem to charge, and although it has a good Wi-Fi signal, it doesn't connect online. Win7 starts right up, and it works fine. It's slow (1.6 gHz Atom CPU), but it works. I used to bring it with me when I traveled, and I'd transfer images to its 320 MB hard drive.

I don't see a practical use for it now, so I might remove the hard drive and use it as an external. It's funny how they were so popular years ago, but they never caught on. It was perfect for me though. It served it's purpose.

I would give a second thought to the idea of using that drive.
It's small and old, drives are cheap to risk a headache for this drive failing.

My son had a netbook, his "baby", loved it, good for carrying around, I've got an 11" Lenovo, IMHO modern version of a net book, runs Win 10, Great for travel!

That's a consideration, but it wouldn't hold any "only" data. I use lots of old drives. So far, so good. They're all redundant - for lending to friends, etc.

I believe 1tb of external storage has dropped below $100.

It's amazing, isn't it? Still, I'd never look for the cheapest hard drive I could find. I stick with HGST Deskstar, usually refurbished. I've been using several for years.

Replace the HD with an SSD. Install linux. It'll be like new. Wish you were near by as I'd be at your backdoor waitng to catch it as youn throw it away

In the Phoenix area there is an outfit that takes donated computers, fixes them up and gives them to students that need a computer. It's https://azstrut.org/ . Securely wipe the disk and donate it.

Wipe the disk with DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke).
