Hi! I have been shooting many years, from film to DSLR. No mirrorless yet. Enjoy mostly landscape and wildlife. Once again I am going to Grand Teton National Park. I was there June of this year and many other times. I plan to go in a couple of weeks. I have a friend there now who is dealing with smoke and mountains are not clear When I go will any filter help? UV, Polarizer? I heard DeHaze in Lightroom might help a bit. Plan to shoot both landscapes and wildlife. Hope the fall colors with be there. Any comments/suggestions?

Dehaze helps a lot but is not perfect. Using it in conjunction with other tools and a little effort may make pix acceptable but they are not award winners by any means.

I took a lot of pix last week at the foot of the Continental Divide (about two miles away) and it was like I was looking at the mountain peaks thru was paper. Some folks said they liked the moody atmosphere of the smoke but i hate it.

Hi! I have been shooting many years, from film to... (show quote)

For the type of smoke you will encounter there is really nothing that will deal well with the air full of actual particles.
It is of a different nature than the moisture haze one generally encounters.
Why rush to go there? Can you hold off and go somewhere else, if you have to go somewhere no matter what?
You say you have been there many times so it is not like a trip of a lifetime.
Perhaps the Smokey Mountain Park instead.

Thank you. i appreciate your response. It definitely will factor into my final decision. At this time I think I will wait until about a week before my flight reservation to see what the air quality is. Thanks again,

Thank you Architect1776. Originally I made reservations to go with my cousin, who just recently cancelled. Now I am hearing about the smoke and thanks to this site, learning about the particles. It is not looking favorable for my previous expectations. I think i will wait until about a week before my scheduled flight to see what air quality is like in the Tetons. I might consider Ridgway, Colorado, and surrounding area if no smoke but that would only be for landscapes. I was hoping for a sighting of Bear 399, other grizzlies and moose as well as landscapes in the Tetons. Thank you very much for responding.

Unless your flight is in October or later, I don't think waiting will do much good. I'm in Nevada between Dixie and Caldor. I expect smoke for the rest of the month--as an optimistic hope.

Sorry, I also agree with architect, there's noting that will clear the smoke to the level here. Where you're going, Dehaze might help.

I think visiting friends and taking nice portraits to keep the photo bug at bay, might define this trip better.

Thank you, Photocraig. Must be smokey where you are. In the news today it said for the Caldor fire "projected to be fully contained by September 13, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection." But that is for the fire and I don't know how long it will take for the smoke to clear or if the Dixie fire will affect it or any Idaho fires or prescribed burns will affect the Tetons. Flight and lodging reservation are for last week in the Tetons and a few days in October. Maybe photos of wildlife would be okay??? This site certainly is helpful to get opinions.
