Palm Tree and Blue Sky with Cloud

I’d like your thoughts on the composition as I started with Thirds and then adjusted for balance. I felt the challenge of subjectivity but it felt right to me. Thanks for your consideration.

Captured with Canon T2i, 55-250mm kit lens, processed in Canon DPP4 and RawTherapee.

Good idea on aiming to balance the palm tree with the cloud. I think that some "space" on the right of the tree would be better (instead of cutting it).
Also some more separation from the bottom border (both for the cloud and the leaves) would be better.

All personal opinion from a very very noob :)

Hi Craig,

Perhaps apply a combination of rotation and perspective correction to make the tree perfectly upright. Then crop on the center line of the tree. Crop the left, if needed, to make the width of negative space on the left equal the width of the tree.

Could then be interesting to copy the suggested image, flip it along the vertical axis, and join the two to make a full tree wrapped by the clouds. If you're into that kind of manipulation.

Hi Gauss, I gave it a shot to test my Photoshop skills and see if I could come close to what you had in mind.

I had no idea how this might look. The part in the middle looks a little bit like a face. Turned the tree into an alien creature. :-) The clouds in the one-for-fun image reinforce it. Can't decide if the symmetric clouds look like arms or wings, more like arms I think. Hopefully a bit of fun for you playing with it.

By the way, regarding just the initial question about cropping. When I mentioned negative space, I was thinking of the empty portion of sky on the left. So the idea would be to balance the same width of tree to the width of the empty sky on the left. Then you'd have roughly a third tree, a third cloud, and a third blue sky. Your OP composition is already almost equivalent to that, and it's certainly subjective as you said.

I really like the way you see things. I see the arms now, too! I had a good time knocking out these edits and feel more confident with my Photoshop skills as I did it without any instructions or tutorials.

I’m still good with the original post but am open to more feedback from the group.

Thanks again for chiming in, Gauss.
