I set up my new smaller mudpuddle maybe six weeks ago by adding grass and leaves to tap water. After a couple of weeks or so the water was filled with bacteria from rotting vegetation and ciliates called colpoda that tend to dominate plant stems and leaves. Now the bacteria are forming, out of their own bodies, a mass structure called biofilm which protects them and tends to envelop everything else.

I put a leaf in water with a tad of sugar to bribe the bacteria. They ate all but the superstructure of the leaf and left a sheer fabric between them. As brewers say, we must be able to use our trained bacteria to do our will.

Some of your bacteria are fast swimmers. Be careful Don, if they get out to the environment... well... bacteria may inhabit our world.. and outnumber us... OH! they already do... and our gut bacteria control our minds... HELP!

Don sign up for the trip to Mars and find the microbes that have survived. Beware of the big Tardigrades they will eat you as in a SiFi film.

I am fascinated with them. They create multicellular capability communicating with each other much as our organs do using chemical flags. Thanks.
