I waited 2 hours to get a shot of the U.P. 4015 as she rolled into town.

Then people showed up and got into the way.

I still like the shot with the people. It gives a size dimension and more important, gives a reason for you wanting the photograph in the first place. It is something special and these people, just like you, want a piece. In my opinion they help to make your excellent photograph better.

In all seriousness, I did do that in a lot of my photos on purpose as the 4014 came by. I am going to be posting a few of them. I agree that the human element can add so much to a photo so as to tell a more interesting story. Oh, and thank you!

Yes, I found it most interesting as to just how many younger people came on their own to see this locomotive.

It's part of our history and I'm glad people are bringing their children to see the trains and locomotives!

The Big Boy made its' way back into K.C. Tuesday. Spokes persons for the U.P. said that over a million people have seen it this year. I'll have to post some more pics. I think you will like them. Some of them (most) will be in the photo gallery.

For the fun of it...next time take several shots of that spot with or without people (as long as anyone in the shot has moved beyond the point they were in the first shot) without the loco, then take the photo of the loco from the same spot - the important point is to have the camera's location and setting the same as when you took the first couple of photos without the loco. Then combine the photos in PS and mask out the people.

Great suggestion. Actually I have done that before; unfortunately not with this locomotive. It works.

I too have done it a few times when I wanted the subject of the photo without all the people. It takes a bit of effort in PS to mask out the people, but like you say it works. Sadly it will likely be sometimes before 4015 rolls thru town again.
