I have Nik Silver Efex Pro2 and am using it in LR4. I have downloaded the trial version of Color Efex Pro4. I am on day 2. I did this because of my good impressions and success with Silver Efex. I would love some input on using Color Efex. Also I am concerned about Google buying Nik. Will the future with Nil be better or worse? The price is high. For color and even more money would I better off with Topaz? I look forward to you expert advice.
Silver effects and Color effects are the only two plugins I still use. Not all the time. I can do most all of the adjustments in PS now. That hasn't always been the case. Some things are just so much easier using these two plugins. I use Color effects pro primarily in colorizing composites. I use Silver effects pro when I want to do a quick B&W otherwise I do manual process.(There are about 10 different ways in photoshop to do B&W)
I like the fact that you can stack filter and save them in Color Effects. As far as who might buy the company I never pay attention to any of that. To me its just about what the product can do and can I do it manually with little or no effort.
Here's a sample of Indian Summer filter in Color effects pro.
Note the Lens flare from shooting into the sun. Pic 1 is straight from the camera.

That, PalePictures, is indeed a very nice picture. I just bought ColorEffects Pro myself a couple of weeks ago and still have to learn how to use it properly, but examples like that are very encouraging. Thanks for posting it!
I like them both, NIK and Topaz... BUT!, NIK allows "spot" and area adjustments---well worth the cost!!!!
I have both Nik and Topaz and use them both sometimes on the same photo depending on the effect I want. At this time Nik does offer more control over adjustments, but I think Topaz is probably headed in that direction as well. Not only is Nik ColorEfex 4 a great program, but Nik Viveza is also a very good one to have for general editing.
If you know someone who is in education-student,teacher or employed in an educational institution, you can get Nik or Topaz plug-ins highly discounted.

Thanks for the suggestion but I could not honestly do that.

I would be tempted, but it's not ethical unless you're qualified. Still??????
It can be put on 2 computers so one person can be in education.

I think NIK requires "proof" of that.... like a teaching certificate and student I.D.
I'm NOT a 'purist" and have in the past "borrowed" software from friends, but have stopped that practice in the interest of keeping companies solvent, job producing, and profitable. Remember to vote for the "capitalist" in November, not the "socialist". This is the very crux of the American success story.
to see how all the filters work, on theNIK website in the education section there is a class called 54 filters in 52 weeks, each week they show a new filter and how the adjustments work. they are up to week 35 or so. the videos are about 5 minutes long.
