About a year ago I had a chance to buy this Micro-Nikkor-P 55mm at a bargain price. Took a couple of test shots but never really did anything challenging with it. This lens comes with an optional Nikon M2 extension tube.

Today I put it on my D850 and went outside and took some handheld shots. This manual lens is most desirable on a tripod with loads of light and patience. It is not as sweet shooting as the Nikon 60mm Macro IMHO, but it is an amazing piece of glass for its vintage. I especially liked the buttery bokeh.

The wind was blowing on the flower stalks and I hand held the camera while shooting on high continuous hoping to capture an in focus frame of these tiny delicate purple flowers. I felt like I was trying to shoot down the eardrum of a person running as I aimed for the center of the flower. :)

The photos were shot in TIF format and converted to JPG for posting, but otherwise no post processing.

A Nikon cap with a penny atop and a couple of the flowers to give a size comparison which was also shot with the 55mm and a SB-400 fill flash.

Very good! The bits that are in focus are sharp, and its fun to rough it at times.
To help keep flowers still you can set up a device called a "plamp", or "plant clamp". There is this commercial one: https://www.amazon.com/WIMBERLEY-PP-200-Wimberley-Plamp-II/dp/B00SCXUZM0 but I wouldn't buy it. I made mine from odds and ends. A wooden dowel rod that is sharp on one end, and then two small electrical clamps on opposite ends of something bendable.

Thanks Mark! I may have to visit Harbor Freight. They might just have a cheaper version of this. I just won an online auction piece... its two alligator clips on bendable arms with a magnifying glass for $7.00. 👍🏻 I am going to see what I can do with it combined with photo stacking. Thanks for looking, commenting and the link.
