More minor, but I recently had the experience that an unopenned USB camera would not work at all. I thought it was only bought certainly in the last 6 yrs, but no drivers exist for it period.

When you plugged it in, did Windows recognize that it was attached and search for a driver? Did the camera come with a driver, and have you searched for a driver online using the camera make and model? (Win 10 driver for...). Also if there’s no Win 10 driver, an earlier version, such as Win 7 may work)

I searched everything and found other reports of the same thing. I believe even found report from maker saying it would not work.

Assuming that Windows actually recognizes that the device is attached, is there an application associated with the device and if so, have you tried running it in compatibility mode?

its quite obvious the first thing I should do is adopt a 12 year old to do these things for me. since thats not an option ill find a local person with the skills to walk me through the upgrade. pretty sad that ive been a serious photographer for 5o years, use multiple programs to edit and print my photos yet, i have no understanding how the system works. good thing my wife gives me an allowance.

Then it’s a USB issue. Either the cable, the port or the device is bad. Even if Windows can’t mount the device, it should show a new device as soon as it’s plugged in and you should hear the chime.

Update to Win 10. Windows 8 is one of the worst releases of Windows ever (and no longer supported or safe), and Windows 10 is the best release so far and much safer. You’re going to run into this issue more and more with your applications - time to bite the bullet and upgrade your OS.

+1

Win 7 worked fine. When I retired in 2015 the public utility I worked for was still using it because it worked. Win 8 was a total bust. Unstable. Crashes all the time. Best to bite the bullet and go to Win 10. It's been out for 6 years now and is the standard of the industry for PC users.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, well, actually I do but it's related to the topic at hand sort of; my Win 10 Dell XPS-15 laptop won't recognize SD cards anymore when I stick them into the built-in slot. I ended up having to use a USB cable connected to the camera directly to download my last couple of batches of pics. Is there some way to load a new driver or check to make sure it's not a mechanical problem like a broken brass connector?

edit - I'm back. I went to the Realtek site and downloaded a new driver for the card reader. Installed it and it did the trick. The reader is now seeing the SD card. Yay! I though I'd pass that along for anyone having the same problem.

PS - I tried the Windows troubleshooter. It showed a problem but when I clicked on Update Driver it said the correcdt driver was already installed. I had to do as I described above and install it separately from the Device Manager/Troubleshooter software which is almost always useless.
