Blue Dasher by Paul Sager, on Flickr

Coneflowers are native to eastern and central North America, where they grow in moist to dry prairies and open wooded areas. They have large, showy heads of composite flowers, blooming in summer.

I thought the two 'spots' on the hind wings of this male Monarch were hanger-on parasites. But, they're indicators of the male.

Most images shown in this post combine the Canon FD Extender 1.4 with the Canon FD new 500mm f/4.5L prime lens, mounted to a Sony a7II 24MP mirrorless camera. The image files were captured in RAW and processed in Lightroom v6 with Topaz DeNoise v6.

Painted turtle

The Eastern amberwing is the second smallest dragonfly in the US, only Elfin Skimmers are smaller. The male's flashy golden wings can make them seem bigger.

Green herons forage alone, typically standing still on shore or in shallow water or perched upon branches, awaiting prey.

Green heron

Native Americans used the bitter, resinous sap of the Compass plant as a form of chewing gum.

Bullfrogs must live in water and are found near a lake, pond, river, or bog. Warm, still, shallow waters are preferred.
