RISC computers because of the reduced instruction set may be problematic with some software...

FUD... Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. The campaign that trade press engaged in after Apple announced the M1 SOC.

VERY LITTLE mainstream software has trouble with the M1. The Rosetta 2 translator built into the M1 and Big Sur (MacOS 11.x) automatically converts Intel code to Apple Silicon RISC format, the first time an Intel application is opened on the M1 machine. Then it runs normally, in many cases faster than it would on an Intel Mac!

There is a website dedicated to tracking what's been updated (and hasn't) for Apple Silicon:

https://isapplesiliconready.com

There are 901 application statuses listed there today. The vast majority of applications that photographers, video producers, and businesses rely on have been converted to NATIVE M1 or Universal (M1 and Intel) apps. Many Universal apps can be configured to run in Intel mode if M1 Native mode does not work (say, for older plug-ins that are Intel-only).

The community of IT pros and reviewers who were initially skeptical of RISC and the M1 are now praising them.

Most major processor manufacturers are trying to figure out how to make their own SOCs with ARM-based technology, so they can compete with Apple, who just announced an $81.4 BILLION dollar sales quarter and a 93% increase in profits for the quarter ended June 30.

I bought an M1 MacBook Air for my college student. Jay has a custom-built tower PC for gaming, but does all video, photo, design, Office 365 productivity, and school work on the MacBook Air. It's a screamer. It was absolutely worth the price.

The M1 is the worst (first) Apple Silicon that will ever be made. I can't wait to see what comes later this year and next.

Both Mac & PC work really well when properly spec'd
16GB RAM is the minimum for a well configured, if you can swing 32Gb it will future proof you a bit.
The Screen and graphics card on MacBook Pros are really superb.

My preference is to keep all photographs on an external SSD connected via Thunderbolt 3 .It keeps your internal drive clutter free I use an Envoy Pro EX from OWC, extremely rugged and through-put up to 2800 mbps (as fast as an internal .) It is small quiet and buss powered.

You're going to get lots of "based on my experience" answers. The real answer is just about any brand now; Mac/PC doesn't really matter as long as we are talking only about photo processing (and it's the processing, not the storage that is important). Important are; 1. fast cpu 2. lots of RAM 3. Good monitor with enough size to see what you are doing 4. good video card. I have 4 desktops and 4 laptops, from 5 different manufacturers, and they all work well enough for me. And as for storage, in-unit is nice, but only the suicidal do not have adequate backup capability. And get SSD. Faster and (maybe) more dependable.

My preference: "Dell is making solid Windows devices."

Apple products have always been overpriced (and avoidable).

I use both apple and windows based products. With Apple, you pay more for everything, but it does tie into their echo system with iPhone etc.
5 years ago, I'd say apple is hands down better, but now I'm seeing my Windows machine being much more stable. Our IT at work has a lot of problems with the 2019 MBP, so if you go Apple, get one of the newer M1 devices. Dell is making solid Windows devices. Microsoft has their dual touch screen tablet surface pros. That is a really nice way to edit.

End of the day, the software you use on them will be basically the same.

I love my MacBook Pro. I would suggest an external WDPassport for Mac for extra storage. I keep all my raw files on the external drive.

Budget is important. You can get a workstation class laptop with tons of storage and ram, and really high end graphics and cpu - and spend $10K or more.

The way laptops are being built these days, they mostly rely on external storage. However you can get a laptop that can be populated with 64gb ram, and 16 TB NVMe m.2 Gen 4 internal storage, and comes with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU and an Nvidia GTX 3080 with 16 gb vram for around $6100. I doubt you'd fill 16 TB of storage.

So, as you can see, budget will likely dictate what your wish list will look like.

I would not include an Apple M1 until software is written that can leverage it's features and benefits.

I have used both Mac and PC over the years. For cost and physical characteristics I recently purchased a HP Elite Dragonfly laptop with 1 Tb SSD drive. It also has a touch screen (which I rarely use). Really lightweight and it's a smaller size than my iPad Pro. I really like the HP.

Recently got the MacBook Pro 16” with 1tb SSD drive, 16mb RAM.
Whatever you get, make sure it’s SSD drive technology, faster and more reliable.

I use the Dell XPS 13 w/Windows 10 and Photoshop Elements installed. It's more compact and easier to travel with than the 15. Wireless transfer is unreliable (don't know if it's camera or computer) so I just pull the chip from the camera, install it into the computer and download the images. I keep the images on the chip until I know that they are backed up. My Dell, through OneDrive sends the images to my desktop at home, where every morning at 6:00 am, the desktop backs them up to an external drive.

I would say if you're not into PCs then the Apple MacBook Pro would be the way to go (even though I'm a Windoz/Linux type of guy).

I use the Dell XPS 15 (2017 vintage - 16 GB, 1TB NVME, Nvidia graphics, beautiful 4k -3800 screen) been very happy with it with one caveat - Dell sucks at writing device drivers - recently after a Dell update I kept getting incessant and random BSODs (blue screens of death) which I could not recover from after many attempts - I almost thought I had a hardware issue but.... I wound up wiping everything out (OS and apps only), and re-installed everything with a fresh Windows 10 2019 version then updated to the latest Windows 2021 updates (no Dell drivers), and everything is smooth now. Gradually adding the apps back slowly to see if there are any issues but so far so good. Dell puts a lot of bloatware in their drivers and do-dad additions of which there are plenty. Also the key to this is to keep your OS/apps separate from your pics/precious data so that if you do have to wipe out and start over it's not a big deal. I see ryzen 9 5900HX processors recommended. Twice as fast but OVERKILL Price recommended for this guys setup $6100. Stupid!

BTW I also use in the home office a PowerSpec gaming desktop PC (from Microcenter) which has been super stable and a top performer. Even if you're not a gamer, a "gaming" PC will give you top performance for image and video editing.

Most gaming laptops will work . I had a Black Friday deal for $400. An HP 15 inch IPS screen with 8 units of ram. The processor is a AMD RYZEN 4500 U WITH RADEON GRAPHICS 2.38 GHZ 6 THREADS with a 500SSD. The processor has a bench mark of 11222 witch is really fast a is better than most mid range gaming computers. Handles 50 megapixel raw files with lightroom. What I See is that there is a lot of overkill on this site.

I would like to put in a good word for Apple's Genius Bar which we have in Palm Springs area. If your "somewhat computer challenged" to say it nicely . . . as I am . . . you can go there and get it fixed . . . so far at no cost. When I used Windows computers for years I had no such benefit.

Call the computer ‘experts’ at B&H. They can advise you on the best bang for the buck for your photo needs. Take advantage of their tax ‘free’ or interest free loans and great service.

Not sure how "High school football shoots" could affect your choice of a laptop however anything with a decent high res screen with +16GB RAM and a +500GB SSD will do anything you might want it to.

16? RAM's cheap, why not go for 32? I've never had a problem with "too much RAM". Harry
