Ever wonder why a common fly has hairs on its wings...? Questions like this keep my up at night reaching for an answer along with why the number of wieners in a pack don't match the number of buns offered in a bag unless we scour the store for "that special pack" of buns that they sell for a premium.

Of course we would not know that common flies had hairs on their wings if we didn't look at them under magnification so I've provided some images that show this for us.

I still don't know why their wings are covered with these tiny hairs although I'm sure that I will sleep well tonight.

A truly fine set, sippy. Someone will know the answer to your question.

Amazing shots of something I never knew was there.
For sure there is a purpose for them, natural selection works very well.
My best guess is that they act as airfoils allowing the wing to more efficiently do its job.

Wow! Awesome shots! I just Googled your question and Bruce has it right. The hairs improve the aerodynamics of the wing.

As for the hot dogs, this is what I found:

Sleep tight!

Everything that I learned about photography, I learned from Timothy Leary.

Thanks, Kpmac. I'd really rather know why the number of wieners don't match the number of buns however I'm sure that it's a conspiracy in the bread business which is secretly run by the Russian Mafia.

Cool...Thanks for the answer. I guess that's why I was able to run faster when I was a lad with hair compared to being an old bald guy now.

Thanks, Carol. I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep after today's naps.

In general, hair dissipates heat - but on wings?
I think we need a 10x image of the tiny hairs, Gary.
Beautiful images!

Thanks, Brenda. I'm curious, do the number of wieners in a package match the number of buns in a package or has this conspiracy spread to the United Kingdom also?

Wow, who would have known. As a kid I used to look at things under a 10X dissecting microscope but I don't remember seeing things like you show us on a daily basis.

The difference in package size is a long running conspiracy between Hot Dog manufacturers and Bun Bakers to deny needed sleep to people. I have heard Oscar giggling about it in the Ballpark.

Curmudgeon, speaking of "Oscar", Oscar Meyer gets over 10,000 applications a year from people wanting to drive their "Weinermobile".
