Wahoo! 26 pounds of cabbage came in Sunday from the garden. First jar of kraut just got packed. Back to work. I love sauerkraut!

Takes me back to a Fridge magnet Mom had for years, being married to a guy of German descent. "What do you call a Grouchy German?..."

Yup! Been eating sauerkraut since I was very young. I even drink the juice. Congrats on your haul!

Not sure of the spelling but grouchy in German is “grew-ka “.

I too enjoy making and eating Sauerkraut, full of probiotics. Up here in Maine cabbage won't be ready until fall, I wait until the sugar in the cabbage is fully developed to make my yearly 5 gal bucket, I think I will make Rubins for supper and post pictures in "The Eye and Lens of a Foodie"

To answer your question, ein mürrischer Deutscher.

I realize the humor of the fridge magnet, which requires fluency in both English and german. Sour Kraut, which is a rather politically incorrect way to address someone from Germany. But, we're just trying to have fun here and not insult anyone.

It's similar to Como tu frijol, cabrito. Which is How you bean, kid. Which works better when said than read.

Yum. Ate a lot of it growing up. Homemade kraut, that is. The crocks are still down in grandma's basement. But, we haven't made it in years. Just get it from the store these days. Dad still grows some cabbage. He uses it in a stew with smoked ham hocks, sweet and sour cabbage and of course coleslaw.

Have a friend in northern MN that still makes his own. I trade him some of my rhubarb for a jar every year. Can't wait.
