I ordered a Canon Camera with a 75-300mm lens through Amazon. I received the camera and a note stating that the lens would follow shortly. It has been 5 days and I am disappointed to not have the lens yet. Is this a usual procedure when ordering a camera online?

No, but right now the lens production of several brands is running behind due to chip shortages. They should have warned you of that.
Doesn’t say much for Amazon as a reliable seller. There is something to be said for using companies like B&H and others who in my experience have always been honest and up front in how they deal with customers.

Did they just say it would follow later? Did they give a reason? Did they give a time frame? Did you contact Amazon and ask for more information?

Thank you for replying and letting me know about the "chip shortages". No warning about a delay.

When camera arrived I was so excited! Laid everything out on table and noticed right away that the lens was not there. Looked at shipping receipt. Tag on receipt said, 75-300mm Lens will follow shortly. We apologize for the inconvenience. No reason given, no time frame for when the lens will be delivered. I will call Amazon. Thank you for your input.

Amazon in the past has always been reliable. I agree that B&H is probably the way I should have gone. I am thinking about returning the camera. Studied everything that I thought I needed for the camera and lens that I wanted. If I had known about the chip shortage I would not have bought at this time. Thank you for replying.

Was it Amazon Direct or one of the many many businesses that sell through Amazon?

Great question! Amazon does sell some items from less than reputable, independent sellers.

If Amazon was the actual seller then you probably have nothing to worry about, except for the delay in getting your lens. Amazon is an authorized Canon dealer and as such has to adhere to Canon's standards or risk their authorization. Not very likely. Have you gone back to the website and checked the availability of that lens? Chances are it will be listed as limited or out of stock. If it shows as in-stock and available then I would contact Amazon as a mistake has probably been made at some point. I always buy from B&H, but, I would have no qualms about buying from Amazon or any other authorized dealer.
If Amazon was not the seller then you may need to do a bit more investigating. As long as they are an authorized dealer I doubt you have anything to worry about. Here are the current dealers:

I don't order any expensive (>$200) camera gear on Amazon. B&H has similar - if not better pricing and real customer service with a person you can talk to.
I also buy at my local camera store - which often has similar - if not better pricing than Amazon - and I'm helped with a real person.
I also buy from Canon refurbished.

My advice would be to cancel the 75-300 and order a 70-300 which is a much better lens. If you don't believe me, check some reviews. Harry PS Or order a 70-200 f4, it's better than either one imho, unless you really need that 300mm.
