Did the weekly shopping yesterday at one of the little supermarkets in town. Have to support them so they stay in business, and any price differences are wiped out by gas for the 150 mile round trip to the city. Anyway, everything was normal till I decided KC style ribs would be a nice change of pace for dinner. Now I usually buy meat in quantity from local Ranchers & Farmers so I'm a little out of touch on prices. $25 for a little slab was a shocker. What you see is half of it. Anyway, corn again because we still have it, and German Potato Salad. This is my Grandfather's recipe developed in his Delicatessens in New York, and when I was given it, I was told not to share it outside the family. Usually the first ingredient is 5 pounds of potatoes, so this the smallest batch I've ever made. Good stuff!

Thanks very much! I actually passed on the ribs, did the rest of the shopping and went back for them. Within reason, I have always followed one of Dad's Rules that you should eat and drink what you want, and as long as you don't break the budget, you are good.

That is a great presentation! I am still waiting for my sweet corn to come in at the Farmer's Market.

Thanks a lot! This corn was on sale at Albertsons and my Wife bought a big pack. No idea where it came from, certainly no local product here yet!

This is the only one I won't share, because that is the way it was given to me. It is very good, and having tasted it, anyone who is a good cook could come very close to duplicating it. Just the way it was back then.

I don't write things down on recipes. What I generally cook is standard everyday stuff that I modify - spur of the moment.
~ So, having said that, my youngest son wanted my Chili recipe last week. I sat down and came up with the most standard items along with a few twists I like to use (like Cajun spices, a bit of Spanish Smoked Paprika, New Mexican Chili powder, or Californian Chili powder if I want a milder chili...). With my list of standard things I start with, my son proceeded to make a pot of chili. I told him to write down what he does so he can modify it next time as he sees fit. He did.
~ He wrote me back a few hours later with what he had done and one of the things he added was a small handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips - that I always do but forgot to tell him!! He remembered me doing that chocolate chip thing from batches I made when he was growing up - as his grandfather had taught me, he remembered that!

So yeah, write things down.... Don't be like ME!!

So much of cooking is by taste, umami, when the kids ask for recipes I write them up the best I can, and keep the Emails on file. Once in a while they'll come back having misplaced it. Saves time. Plus there is a really ugly 3 ring binder full of annotated and hand written recipes. Chocolate in Chili, Cocoa powder can damp down over sweet tomato sauce. Reminds me, somewhere I have a Steak Rub recipe with Chili & Cocoa as ingredients.
